Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

The next morning, the sun rose bright and warm over Chicago, clearing away the lingering chill of the night. In Suite 904, the crystal vase sat in the center of the table. The airport roses, which had looked so bruised and tired the day before, seemed to have opened up in the warmth of the room, their deep red color vibrant against the morning light.
Ethan stood by the window, a cup of coffee in his hand, watching the city wake up.
Lily ran into the room, fully dressed in her favorite jeans and her old sneakers, her stuffed bunny tucked securely under her arm. "Daddy! Are we going home today?"
Ethan set his coffee down and knelt in front of her. "We are, sweetheart. But first, we have one last stop to make."
They checked out of the hotel a few minutes later. This time, walking through the lobby was a completely different experience. The new shift staff at the front desk greeted them with genuine, warm smiles—not out of fear, but because the heavy, toxic cloud that had hung over the lobby had finally evaporated. Lupita was already there, dressed in a beautiful executive suit, chatting happily with a young family who had just arrived with a mountain of chaotic luggage. She waved at Ethan and Lily, her eyes shining with happiness and new hope.
Ethan and Lily took a taxi to the quiet, peaceful cemetery on the outskirts of the city. The grass was green, morning dew clinging to the blades.
They walked hand in hand to a beautiful, simple headstone surrounded by blooming white hydrangeas. The inscription read: Sarah Vance – A Light in the Dark.
Ethan knelt down, and Lily stepped forward, placing a single, vibrant red rose from the crystal vase right at the base of the stone.
"We did it, Mommy," Lily said, her little voice clear and full of joy. "Daddy fixed the hotel. And we brought you your flowers."
Ethan closed his eyes, letting a soft breeze wash over his face. For the past three years, this day had been filled with nothing but heavy, suffocating grief. But today, looking at his daughter’s happy face and remembering the kindness of a stranger who had changed everything, the grief didn't feel so heavy anymore. It felt like love. It felt like hope.
He wrapped his arms around Lily, pulling her close to his chest.

"She loves them, Lily," Ethan whispered, looking up at the clear blue sky. "She loves them very much."
They stood there together for a long time, a father and his daughter, no longer broken by the past, but ready to build a beautiful, kind, and loving future together. And as they finally walked back to the car, hand in hand, the sun shone warmly down upon them, casting long, peaceful shadows on the path ahead.
