Chapter 9 - The Trial of Shadows

Three weeks later, the legal aftermath of Mark Halston’s reign of terror reached its final conclusion in the county courthouse.

Mark had attempted to plead insanity, but the overwhelming mountain of digital evidence, financial records, and the powerful, unwavering testimony of Detective Caleb Brooks completely shattered his defense.

Rachel, Sarah, and Eli sat together in the front row of the gallery on the final day of sentencing.

Mark sat at the defense table in a orange jump suit, his hands manacled to a heavy leather belt around his waist. He looked smaller, graying, and completely stripped of his former polished, arrogant facade.

Judge Miller cleared his throat, his voice resounding through the quiet courtroom.

"Mark Halston," the judge declared, looking down over his half-moon spectacles. "Your actions were calculated, predatory, and devoid of basic human compassion. You used your intelligence and position of trust to exploit those you were sworn to protect. This court finds no mitigating circumstances."

The judge raised his gavel.

"For the charges of aggravated kidnapping, human trafficking, attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, and child abuse, I sentence you to forty-five years in state penitentiary without the possibility of parole."

BAM!

The gavel struck the wooden block with a loud, final crack.

Mark was led away by two bailiffs. As he walked past the gallery, he briefly turned his head toward Rachel and Sarah. But Sarah didn't flinch. She stared directly into his eyes with complete calm, her arm wrapped around Eli’s shoulder. Mark looked away first, bowing his head as the double doors of the court closed behind him forever.

Outside the courthouse, Detective Brooks met them on the wide stone steps under a bright blue sky.

"It’s over," Brooks said, taking off his hat and letting out a long breath. "He’s never coming back."

"Thank you, Caleb," Sarah said, shaking the detective's hand. "For everything."

Brooks smiled, then looked over at Rachel, who suddenly caught her breath and gripped the stone railing of the steps tightly.

"Rachel?" Brooks asked, his eyes widening. "Are you alright?"

Rachel let out a breathless laugh, her hand dropping to the bottom of her belly.

"I think..." Rachel gasped, smiling through a sudden wave of intense pressure, "...I think my daughter just decided it’s time to meet everyone."
