Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Wall

They sat in Detective Brooks’ small, cluttered office on the second floor of the station. Outside, the rain beat relentlessly against the windowpane.
Brooks set the blue baby doll on his desk under a bright desk lamp. He pulled a pair of fine tweezers and a small scalpel from his drawer.
"Eli," Brooks said gently, "you said your mom hid something in the doll's head?"
Eli nodded, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "Two weeks ago. Before Mom disappeared. Mark was at work, and Mom was crying in the kitchen. She said if anything ever happened to her, I had to get the blue doll to someone safe. She said the head opens if you press the eyes together."
Brooks carefully picked up the hard plastic head of the doll. He applied pressure to both painted blue eyes simultaneously.
Snap.
A small seam along the back of the doll's plastic hairline popped open. Inside the hollow skull lay a tightly folded piece of paper wrapped in clear packing tape, along with a small, metallic silver micro-SD card.
Brooks used the tweezers to pull both items out.
He unfolded the paper first. It wasn't a standard birth certificate. It was a formal document bearing the seal of a private adoption agency—Aegis Cradle Services—dated just three weeks prior. It listed Lucy Carter as an "unclaimed ward" available for expedited private placement. Sarah Carter’s signature was on the line at the bottom, but even to the untrained eye, the signature was jagged, unnatural, and clearly forged.
"He was selling her," Rachel whispered, horror rising in her throat. "He was selling his own stepdaughter!"
"Mark isn't my real dad," Eli said bitterly, his voice shaking. "My real dad passed away when I was little. Mom married Mark two years ago. At first, he was nice. But then he started losing money in his business. When Mom got pregnant with Lucy, Mark got angry. He said children were financial anchors."
Brooks slid the micro-SD card into an adapter and plugged it into his desktop computer.
A series of audio files and scanned documents appeared on the screen. Brooks clicked the most recent file.
The sound of rustling papers filled the room, followed by Sarah Carter’s voice—clearer this time, recorded directly on a hidden phone app.
"If anyone is listening to this," Sarah’s recorded voice shook with terror, "my name is Sarah Carter. My husband, Mark Halston, has locked me in the basement sub-structure of our home on Crestview Drive. He has been drugging my food to make me appear unstable to the neighbors. He’s arranged to sell Lucy to an illegal adoption syndicate operating out of Canada. They are coming for her on July 24th. He thinks I don't know about the hidden room behind the furnace, but I hear him talking through the air vents at night..."
The recording cut off abruptly with the sound of a heavy steel door slamming shut.
Rachel gasped, clutching her chest. "July 24th... Brooks, that's tonight! That's in less than two hours!"
Brooks was already on his feet, grabbing his coat and reaching for his radio. "Dispatch, this is Brooks. I need an emergency search warrant for 1442 Crestview Drive immediately. Suspect Mark Halston, suspected active kidnapping and child trafficking."
The radio crackled back. "Detective Brooks, stand by. Judge Miller is off-duty. Securing an emergency warrant will take at least ninety minutes."
"Ninety minutes is too late!" Rachel cried out. "Mark knows Eli came to the police! He knows the clock is ticking! He’s going to take Lucy and clear out that basement right now!"
Brooks looked torn, his jaw clenching as he weighed police procedure against the life of a newborn baby and a captive mother.
"If I go in without a warrant, everything we find might be thrown out of court," Brooks said grimly. "Mark’s lawyers will walk him out of jail in twenty-four hours."
"If you wait for a warrant," Eli screamed, tears streaming down his face, "my mom and sister will be dead!"

Rachel stood up, feeling a sudden surge of fierce, instinctual determination. She looked down at her own round belly, then at Eli, and finally at Detective Brooks.
"You can't break the law, Detective," Rachel said, her voice dead serious. "But I’m a private citizen. And Mark Halston invited me to stay out of his business. I think it’s time I paid his house a visit."
