Chapter 7 - A Mother’s Legacy

The red and blue flashing lights of four police cruisers and an ambulance lit up the rain-slicked street of Crestview Drive.
Paramedics wrapped Sarah, Eli, and baby Lucy in thick thermal blankets, seating them inside the warm back of the ambulance. Medical staff checked Lucy’s vitals—she was slightly dehydrated, but entirely healthy.
Rachel sat on the bumper of the second police car, wrapped in a blanket of her own, holding a warm styrofoam cup of tea provided by an officer.
Detective Brooks walked over, holding his notepad. The rain had finally slowed to a gentle drizzle.
"How are you holding up, Mrs. Bennett?" Brooks asked softly, taking a seat beside her.
"I’m tired," Rachel admitted with a faint smile. "And I think my daughter is going to be an athlete with the way she’s kicking right now."
Brooks chuckled, looking over at the ambulance where Sarah was holding Eli’s hand.
"We searched the basement," Brooks said, his tone turning serious. "Halston had a fully soundproofed room constructed behind a false wall in the utility room. We found passports, forged adoption papers, and thousands of dollars in cash. He was part of a major regional child trafficking ring. Your bravery tonight—and Eli’s absolute brilliant courage—didn't just save Lucy. It’s going to help us take down an entire network."
"And Mark?" Rachel asked.
"He’s going away for a very, very long time," Brooks replied firmly. "Attempted murder, kidnapping, child endangerment, human trafficking. He won't see the outside of a federal prison ever again."
Sarah Carter stepped out of the back of the ambulance, holding baby Lucy wrapped tightly in a clean pink hospital blanket. Eli walked close by her side, clutching his mother's coat.
Sarah walked over to Rachel. The two women looked at each other for a long moment—two mothers who had faced the darkest nightmare imaginable and survived.
"Mrs. Bennett," Sarah said, her voice choked with emotion. "The police told me what you did. You came here... in your condition... to protect a baby you didn't even know."
"Eli brought me the doll," Rachel said softly, reaching out to touch Eli’s shoulder gently. "Your son is a hero, Sarah. He took a terrible risk because he loves you."
"If it wasn't for you listening to him," Sarah whispered, tears glistening in her eyes, "we wouldn't be here tonight. I can never repay you."

Rachel stood up slowly, looking at the newborn baby girl nestled in Sarah’s arms.
"You don't owe me anything," Rachel said softly. "Just raise them with all the love you have."
