Chapter 8 - A Promise Written in Gold

Spring arrived in Chicago with a gentle warmth that melted the last traces of the harsh winter snow. The gardens of the Moretti estate burst into bloom with red roses, white lilies, and lush green lawns.
The estate was no longer guarded by men with visible submachine guns. Instead, discreet security moved around the perimeter, protecting what had become a peaceful family sanctuary.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Aleandro walked with Sophia through the blooming rose garden. Emma was running ahead of them on the soft grass, chasing butterflies, with Bruno trotting slowly behind her. The dog’s leg had healed significantly under the care of the city's best veterinary surgeons, though he still walked with a noble, gentle limp.
"He doesn't look like a war dog anymore," Sophia remarked softly, wrapping her arm through Aleandro’s.
"He isn't," Aleandro agreed, looking at the giant hound, who was currently letting Emma place a crown of yellow dandelions on his massive head. "He retired before I did. He was just waiting for the right boss to give him the order."
Aleandro stopped walking under the shade of an ancient oak tree. He turned to face Sophia, taking both of her hands in his.
The sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting golden light across her face. Sophia looked at him, her heart beating fast, sensing the importance of the moment.
"Sophia," Aleandro began, his voice filled with a deep, unwavering sincerity. "When you first came to this house, you were running from a past that had broken your trust in the world. I was living in a cold tomb of my own making. I thought my life was defined by control, violence, and isolation."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it, revealing a stunning ring featuring a flawless, cushion-cut yellow diamond that captured the golden sunlight like a spark of pure hope.
"You and Emma brought warmth into these dark stone walls," Aleandro said, dropping to one knee on the lush green grass. "You saved my dog, but more than that... you saved me. I don't want to just protect you, Sophia. I want to honor you. I want to give Emma my name, my home, and my entire heart for the rest of my days."
Tears glistened in Sophia’s eyes, bright and joyful. "Aleandro..."
"Sophia Carter, will you marry me?"
Sophia didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him up as she kissed him deeply under the shade of the oak tree.
"Yes," she whispered against his lips, her voice trembling with happiness. "Yes, Aleandro! A thousand times yes!"

From across the lawn, Emma saw them hugging and came running over on her little legs, trailing her dandelion chain. "Group hug! Group hug!"
Aleandro pulled Emma into his arms, laughing, while Bruno jogged up and pressed his massive head against all three of them, barking once—a deep, joyful sound that echoed across the sunny garden.
