Chapter 5 - The Crucible

The night of the Grand Council of the Midwest Syndicate was freezing, rain turning into sleet as it hit the black asphalt of downtown Chicago.

In a heavily guarded subterranean ballroom beneath a luxury hotel owned by the neutral Commission, forty men in expensive suits sat around a massive oval table. At the head sat Don Falcone, an aging, ruthless boss whose empire had been slowly choked by Aleandro’s superior control over the city's logistics and shipping.

Aleandro sat at the opposite end, flanked only by Marco. He wore a dark charcoal suit, calm and completely unbothered by the tense glare of forty armed men.

"You're getting careless, Moretti," Falcone rasped, slamming a thick hand on the table. "Two of my men were returned to my doorstep yesterday in body bags. You breached the Council rules!"

"Your men breached my home, Falcone," Aleandro replied, his voice dropping into the terrifying quiet that always preceded a storm. "They stepped onto my land. They threatened my family. In accordance with the 1984 Accord, any uninvited entry onto a boss’s residence is punishable by immediate execution. I was lenient—I gave them back to you so you could bury them."

Murmurs rippled through the room. The other bosses exchanged glances. Aleandro’s logic was ironclad.

"Family?" Falcone sneered, a cruel glint in his yellowed eyes. "Since when do you have a family, Aleandro? The whole city knows you’re keeping a little maid and her bastard kid in your house. You've gone soft! You let your famous war dog rot in a bedroom while you play house with a servant!"

Aleandro slowly leaned forward. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. Marco’s hand drifted toward his coat, but Aleandro held up a single finger, stopping him.

"Say another word about them, Falcone," Aleandro whispered, "and you won't leave this room alive. Council or no Council."

Falcone’s posture stiffened, but before he could launch his planned ambush, the heavy doors of the ballroom burst open.

It wasn't the police. It was Falcone’s rouge faction—a group of mercenary hitmen Falcone had hired to execute a total coup of the Council. Gunfire erupted instantly, tearing through the crystal chandeliers and plunging the room into chaotic darkness and flashing muzzle flashes.

"Traitor!" someone screamed.

Aleandro was already moving. He flipped the heavy oak table onto its side, grabbing Marco by his collar and pulling him behind the barrier as bullets chewed through the wood.

"Boss! We need to get to the cars!" Marco yelled, drawing his weapon and firing back over the table.

"They blocked the main exit!" Aleandro shouted back, his mind calculating tactics at lightning speed. "The service elevator behind the kitchen—move!"

The firefight was brutal, short, and bloody. Aleandro fought with the terrifying precision of a man who had survived a dozen betrayals. Moving through the smoke-filled corridors of the hotel, he neutralized three mercenaries before reaching the alleyway where his armored SUV was waiting.

As the heavy diesel engine roared to life and Marco slammed the vehicle into gear, speeding away from the burning chaos of the hotel, Aleandro’s phone buzzed in his pocket.

It was an encrypted alert from his estate's perimeter defense system.

Aleandro’s blood ran cold. Falcone hadn't just tried to hit him at the meeting; he had sent a strike team to the estate to take Sophia and Emma hostage as a final insurance policy.

"Marco!" Aleandro roared, slamming his fist onto the dashboard. "Drive! Break every law in this city—GET ME HOME!"
