Chapter 7 - The Reunion

The sun broke through the clouds over Brookline the next morning, painting the private clinic in shades of gold and amber.

Sarah Peterson sat up in her hospital bed, her heart racing as she heard footsteps approaching the door. She had spent the last twelve hours praying, terrified of what a mafia don would do with her daughter, terrified that she had escaped one monster only to hand her child to another.

The door swung open.

"Mama!"

Emma burst into the room, a streak of pink clothing and flying blonde curls. She scrambled up onto the bed, throwing her arms around Sarah’s neck, weeping tears of pure joy.

"Oh baby! Oh my god, Emma!" Sarah sobbed, crushing her daughter to her chest, burying her face in her hair. She kissed her face, her hands, checking her limbs to make sure she was whole, safe, and unharmed. "Are you okay? Did they hurt you?"

"No, Mama! Matt took care of me! He has a big house with a pool and Mrs. Gable made me pancakes and Matt fought the bad man!" Emma cried, her words tumbling over each other in an ecstatic rush.

Sarah looked up, her breath catching in her throat.

Standing in the doorway was Matteo Reichi. He wore a simple navy blue sweater and dark slacks, his hands tucked into his pockets. The terrifying aura of the mafia boss was completely gone, replaced by a profound, heavy silence. He looked at the mother and daughter clinging to each other, and for the first time in his adult life, a tear slipped down his scarred cheek. He quickly wiped it away before anyone could see.

"Ms. Peterson," Matteo said, his voice soft. "I'm Matteo. But Emma calls me Matt."

Sarah stared at him, her defensive instincts warring with the undeniable truth before her eyes. Her daughter was clean, well-fed, happy, and radiant. This man hadn't kidnapped her; he had sheltered her.

"You... you saved us," Sarah whispered, her voice breaking. "Why? Why would someone like you do this for us?"

Matteo walked into the room, standing at the foot of the bed. He looked at Emma, who smiled at him with absolute trust.

"Because a long time ago, I couldn't save my own sister," Matteo said honestly, the truth tearing through his chest like a knife, yet bringing a strange, healing relief. "Her name was Isabella. She was eight, just like Emma. She asked me to help scared kids. It took me fifteen years to find the right door to knock on."

Sarah’s eyes softened, the fear completely evaporating, replaced by an overwhelming wave of gratitude. She reached out her hand across the bed. "Thank you, Matt. Thank you for answering her text."

Matteo took her hand, his large, rough palm covering her gentle fingers. "You're safe now, Sarah. Both of you. Derek Walsh is going to prison for a very long time. Falcone's crew is gone. No one will ever threaten your family again."

"But... we have nowhere to go," Sarah said, looking down at her lap. "Our house... everything is ruined. I don't have money for a new place."

Matteo smiled—a real, warm smile that reached his eyes. "I think we can find a solution for that."
