Chapter 3 - Secrets and Shadows

Within twenty minutes, the quiet street was no longer quiet, though no sirens disturbed the night. Two unmarked black SUVs slipped into the driveway. Out stepped Dr. Michael Evans—a surgeon who owed his medical license and his life to Matteo—alongside three burly men in plain clothes who moved with military precision.
"Get the woman to the private clinic in Brookline," Matteo ordered, his voice returning to its authoritative gravel. He was sitting on the hood of his sedan, Emma wrapped in a clean blanket, fast asleep against his chest. The sheer exhaustion of terror had finally claimed her. "Top-tier care. No police reports. If anyone asks, she fell down the stairs, and she’s being treated at a private facility."
"And the man inside, Boss?" Vincent asked, having arrived with the second wave. He looked at the little girl in Matteo’s arms with profound shock. In ten years of serving Matteo Reichi, he had never seen the man look at another human being with anything resembling tenderness.
"Clean the house," Matteo said coldly. "Take him to the warehouse on Pier 4. Keep him alive until I get there. He has some debts to pay to society, and I intend to collect the interest."
"Understood, Boss. And the kid?"
Matteo looked down at Emma. Her tiny fingers were locked into the lapel of his jacket, even in her sleep. "She stays with me. For now."
Vincent blinked. "To your estate? Boss, with all due respect, the Falcone family has been watching the perimeter. Things are tense after the waterfront dispute. Is it safe to bring a civilian child into your home?"
Matteo’s eyes snapped up, flashing with a lethal brilliance that made Vincent step back. "The Falcones don't know what safe means if they think they can touch anything under my roof. Do your job, Vincent."
"Yes, Boss."
The drive back to Matteo’s estate in the hills of Milton was silent. The mansion was a fortress, surrounded by stone walls, wrought-iron gates, and armed guards disguised as private security. It was a place built to keep the world out, a monument to a man who wanted to live in absolute isolation.
Matteo carried Emma inside, walking past the marble columns and into the grand foyer. His housekeeper, Mrs. Gable—an elderly woman who had known him since his early days in the underground—met him at the door. Her jaw dropped when she saw the sleeping child.
"My Lord, Matteo... who is this?"
"Her name is Emma," Matteo said, walking toward the guest wing. "Her mother is in our clinic. Prepare the room next to mine. Get clean clothes, toys, whatever an eight-year-old needs. Send someone to a 24-hour store if you have to."
"Right away," Mrs. Gable said, her stern face softening into a warm smile. For years, she had prayed that some shred of humanity would return to the hollow shell of a man Michael Rodriguez had become. She hadn't expected it to arrive in the form of a little girl in puppy pajamas.
Matteo laid Emma gently on the oversized plush bed in the guest room. He carefully pulled off her worn sneakers and tucked the heavy duvet up to her chin. As he went to step away, her hand reached out blindly, grabbing his sleeve.
"Don't go, Mikey..." she mumbled in her sleep, her subconscious mixing up his text-name with something deeper.
Matteo froze. Mikey. That was what Isabella used to call him.

He sat down on the edge of the bed, his large, scarred hand resting over her tiny one. "I'm right here," he whispered into the dark room. "I'm not going anywhere."
He stayed there for hours, watching her breathe, while downstairs, the wheels of his empire continued to turn. For the first time in fifteen years, Matteo Reichi wasn't thinking about shipping lanes, extortion, or rival families. He was thinking about how small an eight-year-old girl’s hand felt inside his own.
