Chapter 9 - A New Dawn at Halden North

The heavy mahogany doors swung open once more, but this time, it wasn't an interruption—it was an eviction.
Federal agents moved methodically around the boardroom table. Chairman Vance didn't protest as the plastic cuffs were fastened around his wrists; he simply stared down at his polished leather shoes, defeated by his own greed. Vice President Sterling and two other complicit directors were led out in silence, their expensive suits looking suddenly too large for their shrinking postures.
Within minutes, the executive boardroom was quiet again, save for the hum of the ventilation system and the glowing financial records still resting on the projection screen.
The remaining independent directors—the ones who had been kept in the dark by Vance’s inner circle—slumped in their chairs, looking shell-shocked but deeply relieved. One of them, an elderly board member named Arthur Davies, looked across the table at me and cleared his throat.
"Nathan," Davies said softly. "The company... what happens to the leadership structure now?"
"We rebuild from the ground up," I replied, walking over to stand beside Elena and Lily. "Starting with a complete restructuring of our internal audit protocols, managed by someone who actually has the courage to uncover the truth."
Elena looked up at me, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across her face for the first time since the snow started falling that morning. "I accept the position, Mr. Harrow. Though I expect a raise and significantly better heating in the audit department."
"Done," I said, smiling back.
I knelt down to be at eye level with Lily, who was busy examining a shiny brass pen she had found on the conference table.
"Well, Lily," I said gently. "Do you think your mom is going to be home for dinner tonight?"
Lily nodded happily, her cheeks flushed pink from the cold air outside. "And mom said we can have pancakes with extra syrup because we beat the bad guys."
"Pancakes sound like an executive-level priority to me," I laughed.
Director Hayes stepped into the doorway, tipping her hat slightly. "My agents have wrapped up the perimeter sweeps. Marcus Vale and his co-conspirators are en route to federal holding. Case closed, Mr. Harrow."

"Thank you, Director," I said, shaking her hand firmly.
As the morning sun finally broke through the heavy gray clouds outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, casting a warm, golden light across the boardroom table, the cold shadow that had hung over Halden North Tower finally lifted for good.
