Chapter 7 - The Digital Ledger Exposed

The heavy mahogany doors of the Halden North Tower boardroom stood like a monolithic wall at the end of the executive hallway. Normally, the air here smelled of expensive coffee, polished leather, and quiet, ruthless ambition. Today, it felt like a cage.

Inside, the murmur of nervous directors died down the moment the double doors swung open.

All eyes turned toward the entrance.

Chairman Vance sat at the head of the massive glass table, his silver hair neatly combed, his expression a mask of manufactured concern. Flanking him were three senior vice presidents who had spent the last three years voting for every expansion project Marcus Vale had pitched.

"Nathan," Chairman Vance said, clearing his throat and standing up. "We were just about to initiate emergency voting on corporate receivership. Given the eighty million dollar deficit and your deputy's sudden disappearance—not to mention your absence until this very moment—the board has drafted a motion to strip you of your CEO title pending a federal investigation."

Silence hung heavy in the room. Not a single director met my eyes. They had already judged me. They had already decided that a scapegoat was cheaper than a scandal.

"You might want to hold off on that vote, Chairman," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the polished quiet of the room.

I stepped aside, allowing Elena Reyes to walk through the doorway.

Behind her, holding tightly to her mother’s coat, walked little Lily. And trailing closely behind them were Director Hayes and two SEC enforcement agents in full uniform.

A collective gasp rippled through the boardroom. Chairman Vance’s face drained of color, his manicured hands gripping the edge of the glass table so tightly his knuckles turned white.

"What is the meaning of this?" Vance stammered, casting a frantic look toward the empty seat where Marcus Vale should have been sitting. "Who authorized outsiders to enter the executive suite?"

"I did, Chairman," Elena said clearly, her voice echoing off the glass walls. She walked straight to the center of the conference table, unclipped the scratched plastic badge from her collar, and laid it down beside Vance’s notepad with a sharp clack.

"And I believe you'll find that my audit report is no longer missing," Elena added, pulling the titanium flash drive from her pocket.

Director Hayes stepped forward, plugging the drive directly into the boardroom’s main media console. Within seconds, a massive digital spreadsheet flickered to life on the floor-to-ceiling projection screen behind the chairman's seat.

It wasn't an 80 million dollar discrepancy. It was a live, real-time transaction ledger mapping every single offshore transfer, shell corporation, and forged signature executed by Marcus Vale—with digital audit trails pointing directly to the personal accounts of three directors sitting at this very table.
