Chapter 5 - The Race Against the Clock

The strobes cut through the warehouse like lightning, turning the dusty air into a chaotic storm of flashing shadows. I threw my arm over Lily’s head, shielding her eyes as the deafening clack-clack of tactical boots echoed off the concrete floor from all directions.

"Federal agents! Federal Securities and Exchange Commission! Nobody move!"

The commands echoed through the massive room, crisp and authoritative. Three heavily armored figures dropped from the overhead catwalk, their tactical shields locking into position in front of me and Lily in a seamless display of training. Another team swarmed toward the center aisle, their weapon lights painting Marcus in a relentless grid of laser dots.

Marcus froze, his pistol half-drawn from his holster. For a second, his eyes darted frantically toward the exit, calculating angles that no longer existed. The tactical team closed in with terrifying speed, slamming him against a stack of wooden crates and kicking his weapon across the slick concrete.

"Marcus Vale, you are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy," a tall woman in a dark tactical vest announced as she stepped into the center of the illuminated zone. Her badge gleamed under the emergency lights. "Director Hayes, SEC Division of Enforcement."

I stood up slowly, lifting my hands to show I was unarmed, keeping Lily firmly tucked behind my leg.

"Director Hayes," I said, my voice hoarse from the cold air. "I'm Nathan Harrow. You're just in time."

Director Hayes didn't smile. She holstered her sidearm and walked over, casting a sharp glance down at Lily, who was still clutching her mother’s scratched plastic badge like a lifeline.

"We've been tracking this bleeding-edge logistics leak for three months, Mr. Harrow," Hayes said, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Your name was flagged in the preliminary offshore transfers, but our digital forensics team flagged anomalies pointing straight to an internal sabotage ring. We were waiting for Elena Reyes to deliver the encrypted physical drive before moving in."

"She has the drive," I said, pointing toward the basement monitor feed that still glowed faintly in the background. "They've got her locked in a sub-level room beneath Halden North Tower. Marcus had a live feed running."

Hayes snapped her fingers at two tactical officers. "Break the sub-level comms lock. Secure Elena Reyes immediately."

As the officers moved toward the reinforced security stairwell at the back of the warehouse, Marcus was hauled to his feet by two agents, plastic cuffs biting into his wrists. He glared at me as he was dragged past, a bitter, twisted smile playing across his lips.

"You think you've won, Nathan?" Marcus spat out, his voice dripping with malice as the agents pushed him toward the exit. "The board meeting starts in forty-five minutes. Even if Elena testifies, the proxy votes are already locked in. The board will vote to liquidate Halden Logistics, and your signature is on every single fraudulent asset transfer. You're going down with the ship, Harrow!"

I watched him disappear into the snow-swept night, his words hanging heavily in the frigid air. Director Hayes turned to me, her expression grim.

"He's right about one thing, Mr. Harrow. The board meeting is in forty-five minutes. If you aren't in that boardroom with the physical audit ledger, the directors will vote to strip you of your executive powers and hand control over to the majority shareholders—who happen to be the shell corporations Marcus set up."

Lily looked up at me, her big eyes wide with worry. "Is mom okay?"

May you like

I knelt down, brushing a stray snowflake from her forehead, and forced a reassuring smile. "Your mom is safe now, Lily. And we're going to go make sure everything is set right."

I looked up at Director Hayes. "Let's go to the boardroom."
