Chapter 8 - The Rebuilding

Six months later, the St. Jude sector was a hive of constructive activity, but it looked nothing like a typical corporate demolition site. There were no armed security guards or angry protestors. Instead, local residents stood alongside construction workers, reviewing the progress of the new community hub.

Marcus had been hired full-time by Terry Enterprises as the community liaison manager, ensuring that the construction jobs were given to local residents who needed employment. He walked the site with a hardhat on, a clipboard in hand, and a massive sense of pride radiating from his posture.

"Hey, Chief!" Marcus called out as Andrew walked onto the site, dressed in his working clothes. "The kitchen equipment for the new basement facility just arrived. It’s state-of-the-art. I think Elizabeth is going to cry when she sees the industrial-sized ovens."

Andrew laughed, clapping Marcus on the shoulder. "She deserves nothing less. How are the residential placements going?"

"Perfectly," Marcus replied, his face turning serious and deeply grateful. "Every single family that was originally scheduled to be displaced has been allocated a brand-new apartment in the first phase of the building. Their rent is locked in based on their income. Lily’s mom was crying this morning when she got her keys. She said she never thought she’d live in a place with a working heater, let alone a balcony."

Andrew looked up at the rising framework of the building. It was an innovative architectural marvel—sleek, modern glass seamlessly integrated with the restored old brick of the original church structures. It looked like a bridge between the past and the future.

As he walked through the site, residents waved at him, shouting greetings and words of blessings. Andrew waved back, feeling a profound warmth inside his chest that no corporate acquisition or financial milestone had ever provided. He was no longer a stranger to the streets; he was a part of the neighborhood.
