Chapter 5 - The Corporate Rebellion

The peace Andrew found in the church basement was shattered on a Tuesday morning when his Chief Legal Officer walked into his office, slamming a thick folder onto his desk.

"We have a problem, Andrew," the lawyer said, his face pale. "The board of directors is staging a coup."

Andrew didn't look up from his laptop, where he was currently researching commercial-grade kitchen equipment. "On what grounds?"

"Breach of fiduciary duty," the lawyer explained anxiously. "You’ve unilaterally frozen the St. Jude development project, costing the company millions in delayed timelines. Rumors are circulating that you’re spending your nights in a slum soup kitchen. The board thinks you’ve had a nervous breakdown. Your father’s old partners are rallying the shareholders to vote you out as CEO at the annual meeting next Friday."

Andrew leaned back in his leather chair, looking out at the sprawling skyline. A month ago, this news would have sent him into a blind panic. Today, it felt oddly insignificant compared to the fact that Lily, the little girl from the basement, had passed her spelling test that week because Andrew had spent two hours tutoring her on the floor of the church.

"Let them try," Andrew said calmly.

"Andrew, they have enough voting blocks to strip you of your title!" the lawyer pleaded. "You need to announce the resumption of the demolition immediately. Show them you’re still the ruthless businessman they invested in."

That evening, Andrew sat with Elizabeth and Father Thomas in the rectory. The stress was starting to show on his face again, the old corporate demons clawing at his peace of mind.

"They want to take the company away from me," Andrew admitted, staring into a cup of black coffee. "The company my father built. The company I sacrificed my entire life to run."

Elizabeth placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Andrew, your father built an empire, but he died alone in a hospital room surrounded by lawyers and accountants. He didn't leave a legacy; he left a portfolio. You have a chance to build something else."

"But if I lose the company, I lose the resources to save this place," Andrew argued. "They’ll demolish St. Jude the second I’m out the door."

Father Thomas leaned forward, his eyes bright with wisdom. "Then don't fight them with their weapons, Andrew. Fight them with the truth. They think your mercy is a weakness. Show them it is a strategy."

Andrew looked at the priest, then at Elizabeth. A spark of his old corporate genius ignited, but this time, it was fueled by an entirely different fire. "An absolute strategy," Andrew whispered, a slow grin spreading across his face. "Elizabeth, how many families in the St. Jude sector have been displaced by Terry Enterprises over the last ten years?"

"Hundreds, Andrew. I have all their names in my notebook."

"Get me that notebook," Andrew said, standing up. "It’s time to rewrite the corporate handbook."
