Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

The vote was overwhelmingly in Andrew’s favor. The major institutional investors, moved by both the robust economic data and the unprecedented positive publicity the initiative would bring, voted down the board's coup. Arthur Vance resigned by the end of the week.
The news of Andrew Terry’s corporate pivot swept through the financial world like a wildfire. Headlines called him "The Billionaire with a Heart," but Andrew didn't care about the press. He cared about the blueprints spread across his office desk.
"We break ground on the St. Jude Integrated Housing Complex in two months," Andrew told Elizabeth as she walked into his office carrying a tray of tea.
"It looks beautiful, Andrew," she said, looking down at the designs that preserved the historic church basement while surrounding it with beautiful, modern, affordable apartment units.
"There's one more thing," Andrew said, pulling a legal document from his drawer and handing it to her.
Elizabeth put down the tray and put on her reading glasses. Her eyes widened as she read the header: The Elizabeth Vance Foundation for Urban Renewal.
"Andrew... what is this?"
"I’m funding an independent endowment with fifty million dollars of my personal shares," Andrew explained, his voice softening. "You are the Executive Director. Father Thomas and Marcus will be on the board. The foundation will have total control over the community centers, the kitchens, and the job training programs in every single building Terry Enterprises constructs from this day forward. You will never have to sneak food out of this house in canvas bags again, Elizabeth. You have your own budget now."
Elizabeth stared at the paper, her hands trembling. Large, silent tears rolled down her wrinkled cheeks. She looked up at the boy she had raised—the lonely child who used to hide in his room, now transformed into a man standing in the light of his own profound generosity.

"Your mother would be so proud of you, Andrew," she whispered, her voice choking with emotion. "So very proud."
Andrew walked around his desk and pulled her into a warm embrace. "I'm only doing what you taught me to do, Elizabeth. Thank you for not giving up on me."
