Chapter 10 - The View from the Peak

A year later, Andrew stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his seventy-two-floor penthouse, looking out over the city as the sun began to set, painting the sky in deep shades of gold and violet.

The city skyline looked different to him now. He didn't see numbers, or zoning sectors, or financial symbols. He saw a living tapestry of human lives, all interconnected, all striving for a better tomorrow.

A soft knock came at his door. Elizabeth walked in, carrying two mugs of hot tea. She didn't wear her housekeeper's uniform anymore—she hadn't for a year—but she still loved to spend her evenings chatting with him in the quiet penthouse.

"You're staring out the window again," she said, handing him a mug and standing beside him. "Are you calculating next quarter's projections?"

Andrew smiled, taking a sip of the warm tea. "No. I was actually looking at the St. Jude complex down there. From up here, it looks so small. But I know exactly how big it really is."

He looked at Elizabeth, his face filled with an enduring, deep affection. "Are your bags packed for tomorrow’s trip to the new site in Chicago?"

"They are," Elizabeth smiled proudly. "The Chicago community center is going to be even bigger than the one here. Marcus says the local veterans' groups are already lined up to help us run the kitchen."

Andrew nodded, looking back out at the glowing city. He had spent his entire life running away from the ghost of his lonely childhood, building a fortress of billions to keep the world at bay. But a humble woman with two heavy canvas bags had broken through his walls, showing him that the greatest power a billionaire could ever possess was the power to serve.

He put his arm around Elizabeth’s shoulders, and she rested her head against his side. They stood together at the top of the world, looking down at a city that was finally, truly, beginning to heal.
