Chapter 8 - The East Coast’s Shield

By the time Emma turned eighteen, her reputation had spread through the underground of the entire East Coast like a myth.
The public only knew her as Emma Vance, the brilliant, beautiful adopted daughter of the billionaire philanthropist Marcus Vance. She attended elite charity galas in stunning silk gowns, her grace and intellect charming politicians, celebrities, and foreign dignitaries alike. She was a scholar, graduating at the top of her class in international law from Columbia University.
But to the criminal underworld, she was known by a different name: The Shield of the East Coast.
She had taken over the strategic operations of the Vance family, transforming it from a traditional mafia empire into a highly sophisticated, multi-layered security and intelligence syndicate. She had systematically eliminated the corrupt factions within the organization, ensuring that the Vance family operated with a strict code of honor: no drugs, no human trafficking, and absolute protection for the innocent.
On the evening of her eighteenth birthday, a grand gala was held at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan. The room was a sea of glittering diamonds, expensive tuxedos, and crystal chandeliers.
Emma stood at the balcony overlooking the ballroom, wearing a breathtaking sapphire-blue gown that matched the deep color of the ocean she had conquered years ago. Her brown hair was styled in an elegant updo, revealing a small, faint white scar on her shoulder—a reminder of the shattered car window from her childhood rescue.
Marcus walked up beside her, holding two glasses of champagne. He looked older now, with silver hair dusting his temples, but his posture was as commanding as ever.
"A beautiful crowd," Marcus said, handing her a glass. "Every powerful person from Boston to Miami is in this room tonight, Emma. And every single one of them is watching you."
"They aren't watching me, Marcus," Emma said with a soft, confident smile. "They are watching the empire you built."
"No," Marcus corrected gently, his eyes filled with an overwhelming emotion. "They are watching the empire you saved. If you hadn't dove into that water seven years ago, Breanna would be gone. I would have destroyed myself in rage, and this family would have torn itself apart in a bloody war. You didn't just save my wife, Emma. You saved all of us."
Breanna joined them, looking radiant in a shimmering silver dress. She took Emma’s hand, squeezing it tightly. "Happy birthday, my beautiful daughter."
Suddenly, Victor approached them, his expression serious. He leaned in to whisper to Marcus, but Emma noticed his movement instantly.
"What is it, Victor?" Emma asked, her voice dropping into her sharp, operational tone.
"The Moretti family," Victor reported quietly. "Their Don, Anthony Moretti, has just entered the hotel lobby. He wasn't invited, Miss Emma. He brought six heavily armed bodyguards. The security team at the door is holding them, but it’s creating a scene."
Marcus’s jaw tightened, his hand dropping toward his coat. "I'll handle this personally."
May you like
"No," Emma said, placing a gentle hand on Marcus’s arm. Her sapphire eyes flashed with a cold, brilliant authority that made even the old mob boss freeze. "You are the patriarch, Marcus. You don't deal with pests on my birthday. I’ll handle it."
She handed her champagne glass to Breanna, gave her a reassuring wink, and walked toward the grand elevators, her sapphire gown flowing behind her like a royal shroud.
