Chapter 10 - The Safest Child in the World

Six months later, the dust from the fall of the Moretti family had completely settled, ushering in an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for the East Coast.
It was a beautiful, warm summer afternoon at the Vance estate. The black Atlantic ocean below the cliffs was calm today, its surface glittering like a sheet of diamonds under the clear blue sky.
A grand celebration was taking place on the sprawling lawns behind the mansion. It wasn't a mafia meeting, nor was it a corporate gala. It was a family barbecue.
Dozens of children from the St. Jude sanctuary—the very home Marcus had built to replace the horrific Riverside facility—were running across the grass, laughing, playing tag, and eating ice cream. They were healthy, happy, and free, their lives completely transformed by the charity foundation Emma managed.
Marcus stood by a massive stone grill, wearing an apron that read 'World’s Best Boss,' flipping burgers while sharing a laugh with Victor. Breanna sat at a nearby picnic table, surrounded by several little girls who were listening intently as she read them a fairy tale.
Emma stood near the edge of the cliff, leaning against a newly installed, heavy steel guardrail. She wore a simple white sundress, her hair flowing freely in the warm ocean breeze. She looked down at the dark water where she had nearly lost her life seven years ago, feeling a deep, profound sense of completeness.
A shadow fell beside her. Marcus walked over, holding two plates of food, and handed one to her.
"You're quiet today, Emma," he said softly, looking out at the ocean with her.
"Just thinking," Emma replied, taking a bite of her food. "About the night I ran away. About how scared I was. If someone had told me back then that I would be standing here today, surrounded by people who love me, with a family... I would have told them they were crazy."
Marcus placed his large, scarred hand over hers on the railing. "You earned every bit of this, Emma. You fought for your freedom, and then you turned around and fought for the freedom of everyone else. Look at those kids out there. They will never know the pain you went through, because you built a wall of protection around them."
Breanna walked over, slipping her arm around Emma’s waist, leaning her head against her daughter’s shoulder. "The whole coast is talking about you, you know. The newspapers call you the young savior of New York."
Emma laughed, a beautiful, clear sound that carried over the sound of the waves below. "They can call me whatever they want, Mom. As long as I'm here with you."
She looked back at the grand mansion, at the security teams standing discreetly at the perimeter, at the laughing children, and at her parents standing beside her.

She had started her journey as an eleven-year-old barefoot runaway, ignored by every car on a dark, rainy highway, running for her very life. But she had made a choice to dive into the black abyss. She had chosen courage over fear, love over survival.
And because of that choice, Emma Vance was no longer running. She was home. She was loved. And she had truly become the most protected, safest, and most cherished girl on the entire East Coast.
