Chapter 5 - Shadows of Riverside

The morning sun broke through the heavy curtains of the Vance estate, casting long, golden geometric shapes across the plush carpet of Emma’s new room. She woke up slowly, her body still aching from the physical trauma of the ocean, but for the first time in years, she didn't wake up with her heart racing in fear.

There were no shouting voices outside her door. There was no smell of stale grease and bleach. Instead, the faint, mouth-watering aroma of baking bread and fresh vanilla drifted through the air.

Emma climbed out of the massive bed, her feet sinking into the thick wool rug. Beside the bed, someone had placed a brand-new pair of soft leather slippers and a beautifully tailored set of clothes exactly her size: a soft gray cashmere sweater and comfortable denim jeans.

She dressed quickly, feeling a strange sense of unreality as the expensive fabric touched her skin. She walked toward the heavy wooden door, turning the brass handle slowly, expecting it to be locked.

It opened easily.

The hallway outside was vast, lined with beautiful oil paintings and marble sculptures. Emma walked quietly, her slippers making no sound against the polished floorboards. She followed the scent of food down a sweeping grand staircase until she reached a sunlit dining room.

Breanna was sitting at the head of a long mahogany table, reading a tablet while sipping tea. When she saw Emma standing hesitantly in the doorway, her face lit up with a brilliant, joyful smile.

"Good morning, sleeping beauty!" Breanna called out, waving her over. "Come, sit down. Chef Louis made blueberry pancakes, bacon, and fresh fruit just for you."

Emma approached the table slowly, looking around the massive room. "Where is Mr. Vance?"

"Marcus had some business to take care of last night," Breanna said, her eyes flashing with a knowing, subtle glint. "But he will be back soon. Come, sit down and eat. You need to regain your strength."

As Emma dug into the best meal of her life, she couldn't help but look at Breanna’s arms. The woman was wearing a short-sleeved blouse, and Emma could see faint, fading bruises on her wrists from the car accident.

"Are you okay?" Emma asked softly, pointing her fork toward Breanna’s arm. "From the car?"

Breanna looked down at her arm, then back at Emma, her eyes softening with a deep, emotional intensity. "I am perfectly healthy, Emma. Because of you. The doctors said that if I had been underwater for even thirty seconds longer, my brain wouldn't have survived. You gave me my life back."

"I was just so scared you were going to drown," Emma whispered, looking down at her plate. "My mom... she drowned when I was eight. In a lake. I couldn't save her. I was too small. When I saw you in that car... I just couldn't let it happen again."

Breanna’s breath hitched. She stood up immediately, moved around the table, and pulled Emma into a warm, protective hug, pressing her lips to the top of the girl’s head. "Oh, sweetheart... I am so sorry. But you aren't small anymore. You are a hero. And your mother would be so incredibly proud of you."

Before Emma could cry, the heavy front doors of the mansion opened, and the booming sound of footsteps echoed through the foyer. Marcus Vance entered the dining room, followed by his top lieutenant, a stern-faced man named Victor.

Marcus looked tired, but his eyes were bright. When his gaze fell upon Emma, a genuine, rare smile broke across his rugged features.

"Good morning, Emma," Marcus said, walking over to pat her gently on the shoulder. He sat down at the table, and a maid immediately placed a cup of black coffee in front of him.

"Is it done?" Breanna asked her husband, her voice dropping into a serious, quiet tone.

Marcus took a sip of his coffee and nodded. "Riverside Children’s Home is gone. The state shut it down three hours ago due to 'extreme safety violations.' Every child has been moved to St. Jude’s under our personal oversight. They have clean beds, good food, and real doctors."

Emma stopped chewing, her fork hovering in mid-air. "And... and Mr. Peterson?"

May you like

Marcus looked directly into Emma’s eyes, his expression calm, steady, and utterly reassuring. "Mr. Peterson will never hurt another child as long as he lives, Emma. He has been... permanently removed from his position. You never have to worry about him again."

Emma didn't know exactly what "permanently removed" meant in Marcus’s world, but looking at the absolute certainty in the man’s eyes, she knew she was safe. A profound sense of peace washed over her, sweeter than any syrup on her plate.
