Chapter 6 - A New Guardian on the Horizon

Two months passed, and the transformation of Emma was nothing short of miraculous.

The frail, terrified girl who had run barefoot along the stormy highway was gone. In her place was a vibrant, healthy twelve-year-old with bright, laughing eyes and hair that shone like polished chestnut. Under Breanna’s loving care, Emma had gained weight, her cheeks had filled out with a healthy pink glow, and she had grown nearly two inches.

She was no longer just a guest at the Vance estate; she had become the heart of it.

Marcus had hired the finest private tutors in the country to educate her, discovering that Emma possessed a brilliant, analytical mind. She absorbed books like a sponge, showing a particular aptitude for mathematics, history, and languages.

But her education didn't stop at textbooks.

One sunny afternoon, Emma walked out to the sprawling courtyard behind the mansion, where Marcus was standing near a beautifully manicured lawn. Beside him stood Victor, holding a polished wooden case.

"Emma," Marcus called out, gesturing for her to come closer. "Come here."

Emma ran over, her sneakers squeaking against the stone tiles. "Yes, Marcus?"

Marcus opened the wooden case, revealing a set of sleek, silver throwing knives, beautifully balanced and perfectly crafted.

"You are safe here, Emma," Marcus said, his voice serious yet filled with parental pride. "But in my world, safety is something you must also know how to maintain. The Vances do not rely solely on others for protection. We train our own."

Emma looked at the knives, her eyes wide with curiosity. "You want to teach me how to fight?"

"I want to teach you how to never be a victim again," Marcus corrected gently. "Victor is one of the finest martial arts and weapons instructors in the military world. Starting today, you will spend two hours a day with him. You will learn how to defend yourself, how to read a room, how to spot danger before it finds you, and how to neutralize it if it does."

Breanna walked out onto the patio, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade. She smiled as she watched Marcus show Emma how to properly balance a knife in her palm.

"Don't turn her into a complete brute, Marcus," Breanna teased, though her eyes were filled with approval. She knew better than anyone that being married to the most powerful man on the East Coast meant danger was always a shadow away. If Emma was to be their daughter, she needed to know how to survive in that shadow.

"She has the heart of a lion, Bella," Marcus replied, looking at Emma as she gripped the handle of the knife. "She dove into an ocean at eleven. She’s already braver than most of my captains."

Emma took a deep breath, mimicking Marcus’s stance exactly as Victor had shown her. She focused her eyes on a heavy wooden target set up forty feet away on the lawn. She drew her arm back, shifting her weight effortlessly, and threw the knife with a quick, decisive snap of her wrist.

Thwack.

The silver blade buried itself deep into the outer ring of the target, vibrating with force.

Victor let out a low whistle of appreciation. Marcus laughed, a big, booming sound of pure joy, and clapped his hand onto her shoulder.

"A bit to the left, but excellent form," Marcus praised. "By the time you are eighteen, Emma, you will be the most protected girl on the East Coast—not just because of my men, but because of yourself."

Emma smiled, her heart swelling with a deep sense of belonging. She wasn't an orphan anymore. She wasn't a runaway. She was a Vance.
