Chapter 7 - The Breaching of Pier 42

Outside the warehouse, Officer Rachel Brooks ducked low behind the reinforced door of a tactical transport vehicle, her weapon drawn and trained on the corrugated metal siding of the building. Rain sheeted down her jacket, but she didn't feel the cold. Her entire focus was locked on the side service door twenty yards away.

"Hostage is confirmed with the suspect," a tactical commander barked into his radio. "Suspect is armed with a blade. Primary team, prepare to breach on my mark. Sniper team, hold your fire unless clear shot presents."

Rachel stepped up beside the lead tactical officer. "Sir, I know the layout of that warehouse from old port registries. There's a secondary access catwalk along the western wall that leads right above where they're standing. If I can flank them from above, I can draw his attention away from Clara."

The commander glanced at her sharply. "It's a high risk, Officer Brooks. He's unstable."

"If we storm the main door head-on, he'll panic and hurt her," Rachel insisted, her voice unwavering. "Give me thirty seconds to get on the catwalk, then breach through the front."

The commander nodded curtly. "Go. Move fast."

Crouching low, Rachel sprinted through the pouring rain toward a rusted exterior ladder bolted to the side of the warehouse. Her boots gripped the rungs as she hauled herself upward, pulling open a heavy, rusted service hatch that led directly into the smoky rafters of the building.

Below her, the cavernous warehouse was bathed in the harsh glare of police spotlights streaming through the shattered skylights.

She crept silently along the metal catwalk, her footsteps muffled by the roar of the idling tactical trucks outside. Peering over the rusted railing, she saw Darren Vance standing near a stack of shipping crates, his arm locked tightly around Clara’s neck, the blade glinting menacingly against her skin.

Clara was weeping silently, her eyes closed in exhaustion and fear, but she was still breathing.

"Drop the knife, Darren!" a megaphone shouted from the main entrance as the heavy metal doors were blown open with a concussive bang, sending plumes of white smoke billowing into the room.

Tactical officers poured into the warehouse in a disciplined wedge, shouting commands, their rifle lasers painting red dots across the concrete walls.

"Back up! All of you back off or I slit her throat right now!" Darren screamed, pressing the blade deeper until a tiny bead of crimson welled up on Clara's neck.

The tactical team halted, holding their positions. The standoff hung by a thread, every officer frozen, waiting for an opening.

Rachel quietly unclipped a heavy flash-bang grenade from her tactical belt. She pulled the pin, measured the distance below, and silently flipped it over the railing.

The device dropped through the air like a falling star.
