Chapter 5 - The Search in the Rain

The rain had turned into a steady, freezing drizzle by 4:15 a.m., slicking the asphalt and coating the Detroit streets in a glistening, miserable sheen. Squad cars lined the block surrounding the apartment complex, their emergency strobes painting the brick facades in rhythmic pulses of red and blue.

Officer Rachel Brooks stood by the open door of a cruiser, shaking off the chill as she reviewed the initial search reports. K-9 units had swept the alleyways, but the scent had grown cold amidst the heavy downpour and the chemical runoff from a nearby industrial park.

Marcus Thorne’s voice came through her earpiece, direct and weary from his grueling shift. "Rachel, I've got eyes on traffic cameras near the pharmacy three blocks away from Lily's apartment. Take a look at your mobile terminal."

Rachel clicked open her dash terminal. A looped video file began to play, timestamped at 2:05 a.m.—just minutes before Lily’s emergency call.

The grainy footage showed a woman in a dark hooded sweatshirt running breathlessly down the sidewalk, clutching a small plastic prescription bag tightly to her chest. She glanced over her shoulder repeatedly, panic etched into every movement. Just half a block behind her, a towering figure in a heavy jacket stalked out of the shadows, matching her frantic pace.

"That's Clara," Rachel whispered, watching the screen.

"Keep watching," Marcus instructed.

On the screen, Clara reached the corner of Walnut Street, darting between two parked delivery vans to cut across the alley toward her apartment complex. The pursuer surged forward, lunging into the blind spot between the vehicles.

Then, the camera angle shifted. The view cut to a security cam mounted on the corner bodega.

The footage showed Clara stumbling against a brick wall, dropping the prescription bag as the man cornered her. A brief, violent struggle ensued. The man grabbed her arm, lifting her off her feet as she fought desperately, kicking and screaming silently into the rainy night air. Within seconds, he dragged her roughly toward the back of an idling, dark-colored pickup truck parked illegally in the loading zone.

The truck’s tail lights flared, and it peeled out into the wet street, splashing muddy water across the pavement before vanishing into the dark.

Rachel stared at the screen, her jaw tight. "He didn't just scare her, Marcus. He abducted her."

"We have the license plate number from the bodega camera," Marcus replied, triumph evident in his voice despite the grim reality. "It's registered to an alias linked to one of Darren Vance's known associates. They're heading north toward an abandoned warehouse district near the river."

"Dispatch tactical teams and notify state troopers," Rachel ordered, slamming her hand against the side of the cruiser. "We're going to get her back."
