Chapter 3 - The Desk and the Disappearance

Back at central dispatch, the fluorescent lights hummed a steady, headache-inducing tune. Marcus Thorne leaned over his dual monitors, his fingers flying across the keyboard. The coffee he had been nursing was stone cold, but he didn't care. The face of seven-year-old Lily, captured in his mind from the initial notes and the police body-cam stills, lingered behind his eyes.

"Come on, Clara," Marcus muttered to himself, clicking through the police database for Apartment 4B.

The system whirred, pulling up municipal records, tax assessments, and local police dispatches. The name Clara Evans popped up with three entries.

Marcus clicked the first one.

Date: Fourteen months ago. Call Type: Domestic Disturbance. Caller: Anonymous neighbor. Notes: Shouting reported from Apartment 4B. Officers arrived; resident Clara Evans stated nothing was wrong. No report filed.

He clicked the second entry, dated eight months ago.

Date: Eight months ago. Call Type: Trespassing / Harassment. Caller: Clara Evans. Notes: Complainant states an estranged partner, identified as Darren Vance, attempted to force entry into the residence. Subject fled before units arrived. Complainant advised on obtaining a restraining order.

Marcus’s eyes narrowed. He scrolled down to the third entry—the most recent one, dated just three months ago.

Date: Three months ago. Call Type: Violation of Protection Order. Notes: Subject Darren Vance located near the premises. Arrested and booked into county jail for stalking and probation violation.

Marcus checked the jail release logs. His heart gave a heavy thump against his ribs.

Darren Vance had been released from county custody just forty-eight hours ago.

He immediately picked up his desk phone and patched a direct line to Officer Rachel Brooks, who was still inside the dark apartment.

"Rachel, I found it. You need to get out of there right now," Marcus said, urgency lacing every syllable.

"What is it, Marcus? Did you find Clara?"

"Clara didn't abandon her kids, Rachel. Her ex-boyfriend, Darren Vance, was released from jail two days ago. He has a history of violent domestic calls at that address, and there's an active order of protection against him. If Clara went out to get medicine for Leo at two in the morning, she walked right into a trap."

Rachel stopped dead in the center of the children's room. The scratched-out photograph on the bedside table suddenly took on a terrifying clarity. "She didn't want to leave them, Marcus. But Leo was burning up with a high fever. She ran out because she had no choice, hoping she could make it back before—"

Before he caught her.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic clatter echoed through the front room of Apartment 4B, followed by the heavy, deliberate thud of a boot hitting the outer hallway floor.

Rachel froze, drawing her service weapon from its holster with practiced, silent precision.

"Marcus," she whispered, her voice barely a breath. "Someone's in the hallway. They're trying the door."
