Chapter 4 - Echoes in the Hallway

The heavy oak door of Apartment 4B shuddered under a sudden, violent blow.

Rachel crept down the narrow hallway, pressing her back against the peeling wallpaper. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her grip on her firearm remained steady. In the dim light of the living room, she watched the doorknob jiggle wildly.

"Police! Step away from the door!" Rachel shouted, her voice echoing in the confined space.

The rattling stopped instantly. For a terrifying second, the hallway fell completely silent, save for the steady drip of a leaky pipe somewhere above. Then, a low, raspy laugh drifted through the wood.

"I know you're in there, Clara," a man's voice snarled from the other side. It was thick with alcohol and rage. "You thought you could hide the kids from me? Open the damn door before I kick it off the hinges!"

Rachel stepped up to the door, peering through the small, fisheye peephole. Outside, illuminated by the flickering amber light of the hallway bulb, stood a tall, broad-shouldered man with a hood pulled low over his forehead. His face was weather-beaten, his eyes wild and bloodshot as he kicked the base of the door once more, sending splinters flying across the linoleum.

"Darren Vance, drop it!" Marcus’s voice boomed over Rachel’s open radio, loud enough that the man outside flinched. "Detroit Police Department! Additional units are three minutes out. Step away from the door with your hands up!"

Darren turned his head toward the radio clip pinned to Rachel's shoulder, snarling like a cornered animal. "Cops! Always sticking your noses where they don't belong! Where's Clara? She took my kids! Where is she?!"

"Clara isn't here, and neither are the children," Rachel yelled back, her tone sharp and authoritative. "They are safe. You are trespassing, and you've got multiple active warrants. Surrender now."

Darren let out a feral roar of frustration. He slammed his shoulder against the door again. The old wood cracked loudly, the bolt straining against the frame. The heavy chair that Clara had wedged beneath the knob groaned under the pressure, sliding a few inches across the floor.

Rachel braced herself, lifting her weapon. If he broke through that frame, she was prepared to take action to protect herself and the integrity of the scene.

Suddenly, the sharp wail of approaching sirens sliced through the stormy Detroit night. Red and blue lights flashed wildly against the cracked windowpanes of the apartment, casting frantic crimson and azure waves across the walls.

Darren froze. He looked down the empty, dark hallway toward the stairwell, then back at the door of 4B.

"This isn't over," he spat out, his voice dripping with venom. "Tell Clara I'm coming back for what's mine."

Heavy, rapid footsteps thudded down the hallway as Darren bolted toward the emergency exit stairs, slamming the metal fire door shut just as the heavy thud of running boots echoed from the opposite end of the hall.

"Apartment 4B! Backup is here!" a male officer shouted, slamming his fist against the exterior of the door.

Rachel exhaled a long, shaky breath, lowered her weapon, and reached down to kick the battered chair out from under the handle. She pulled the door open to find two patrol officers standing breathless in the hall.

"He went down the stairwell toward the alley," Rachel said, her eyes flashing with determination. "Call K-9 units to track him, and put out a citywide BOLO for Darren Vance. He's dangerous, and he's looking for Clara."
