Chapter 6 - The Confession Room

The interrogation room was stark, lit by a single overhead fluorescent bulb that buzzed with an irritating, high-pitched whine. Marcus sat at the center table, his expensive tailored suit now wrinkled and stained with sweat. His manicured hands were cuffed to a steel bolt in the tabletop, and the arrogant smirk that had defined his personality for years was completely gone, replaced by a twitchy, hunted desperation.
The heavy steel door clicked open, and Ethan and I walked in together.
Marcus’s head snapped up. When he saw Ethan walking shoulder-to-shoulder with me—his wife, the woman he had tried to frame and murder—his face contorted into an ugly grimace of rage and humiliation.
"You!" Marcus spat, straining against his handcuffs. "You're a dead man, Ethan! You and your little federal circus can't touch me! My lawyers—"
"Your lawyers were arrested thirty minutes ago at O'Hare Airport trying to board a private jet with four million dollars in bearer bonds," Ethan interrupted smoothly, pulling out a chair and sitting directly across from Marcus. I stood right behind Ethan, my arms crossed, looking down at the man who had turned my life into a living nightmare.
Marcus swallowed hard, his bravado evaporating like morning mist. He turned his wide, bloodshot eyes toward me. "Sarah... baby, please. You know how these federal agents are. They twist things! Chloe did it! She’s the one who handled the vitamins, she’s the one who wanted the money! I was just... I was manipulated!"
"Stop talking, Marcus. You're embarrassing yourself," I said, my voice cold, calm, and utterly devoid of pity. "I watched you pour champagne with her while my daughter was turning blue in the backseat of my car. I listened to you tell the police that I was a murderer. You didn't just cheat on me—you tried to kill my child."
"She’s not your child! She’s his!" Marcus shrieked, pointing a shaking finger directly at Ethan. "You knew all along, didn't you? You trapped me into raising another man's bastard!"
"Lily is a magnificent, innocent little girl who loved you as a father, and you treated her like disposable trash," Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave into a tone so terrifyingly calm that Marcus physically recoiled. "And for the record, Marcus, you didn't 'trap' yourself into anything. You embezzled twelve million dollars from public infrastructure funds, laundered it through shell corporations, and used my family as collateral to cover your tracks."
Ethan slid a thick manila folder across the table and opened it. Inside were printed transcripts of encrypted text messages between Marcus and Chloe dating back over a year, detailing every step of the poisoning plot, the insurance policy, and the plan to frame me for first-degree murder.
"Chloe already signed a full confession," Ethan continued, watching Marcus’s face drain of every remaining drop of color. "She gave us the voice recordings of you instructing her on how to administer the synthetic neurotoxin without leaving forensic traces. You're looking at consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole in a federal maximum-security penitentiary. No bail. No appeals."
Marcus slumped forward, his forehead hitting the cold steel table as a choked, pathetic sob broke from his throat. The mighty corporate executive, the ruthless manipulator who had thought he could outsmart everyone, was nothing more than a coward facing the absolute abyss of his own making.

"Take him down to holding," Ethan instructed the guards waiting by the door.
As they hoisted Marcus up and dragged him out of the room, he didn't look back. The door slammed shut behind them, sealing his fate forever.
