Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The sterile white lights of the emergency room seemed to hum with a malicious frequency. Marcus’s voice echoed off the tiled floors, bouncing through my shattered consciousness like a physical blow. The two police officers didn't hesitate; they stepped forward, their heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the floor before their hands gripped my shoulders with cold, unyielding authority.
"Sarah Miller," the taller officer said, his voice flat and devoid of human emotion as he pulled a pair of gleaming silver handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for the suspected attempted poisoning and endangerment of a minor. You have the right to remain silent—"
"No! Wait! You don't understand!" I screamed, thrashing against the grip of the officers, my eyes locked on Marcus's smug, sneering face. "He’s lying! Lily is fighting for her life inside that ICU! Marcus, how could you? Your own daughter—!"
"She is not my daughter!" Marcus roared back, stepping into my personal space, his eyes bloodshot not from grief, but from pure, unadulterated malice. Behind him, Chloe peeked through the hospital doors, draped in Marcus's expensive cashmere coat, her lips curled into a sickeningly triumphant smirk. "I found the medical records, Sarah. I ran the tests weeks ago in secret. I knew she didn't look like me. I knew she wasn't mine! And tonight, when you thought I was out drinking, I was actually filing the paperwork with my lawyers to strip you of everything!"
Dr. Vance stepped between Marcus and me, his tall frame blocking Marcus's reach. "Mr. Miller, this is a hospital. Furthermore, the child is in critical condition suffering from a targeted synthetic neurotoxin. Your priority should be her survival, not staging a theatrical arrest."
Marcus scoffed, crossing his arms over his tailored suit jacket. "Save your breath, Doctor. That woman poisoned her to cover her tracks because she knew I was divorcing her. Look at her—she’s a fraud. And as for the child... let the state take her. I want nothing to do with Ethan’s bastard."
The name hit the room like a physical shockwave. Ethan.
Dr. Vance’s head snapped toward Marcus. "You know about Ethan?"
"Of course I know!" Marcus sneered, spitting the words out like venom. "Sarah cried over his grave for a year before she trapped me into marriage with a belly full of another man's ghost. Do you really think I wouldn't investigate the woman sharing my bed? But she slipped up tonight. She thought she could poison the kid and blame it on a sudden illness while I was out. Well, the police are here, and she’s going away for a very long time."
Tears streamed down my face, hot and blinding, but beneath the grief, a cold, hard ember of absolute fury ignited in my chest. They thought they had trapped me. They thought I was a helpless victim who would crumble under their coordinated assault. But as I looked at Marcus—the man I had sacrificed my career, my youth, and my sanity for—I realized the monster he had truly become. He wasn't just a cheater; he was a cold-blooded schemer who had planned my destruction.
"Officer," I said, my voice suddenly dropping to a chilling, steady whisper that made the senior cop pause mid-cuff. "Before you read me my rights, look at my husband’s left breast pocket. He’s wearing a corporate espionage wire. And check his phone—he didn't just turn it off tonight. He transferred two million dollars from our joint venture into an offshore account registered under Chloe Vance's maiden name... wait, no, Chloe Henderson."
Marcus’s face drained of color instantly, the smirk vanishing from his lips as his hand involuntarily flew toward his breast pocket. "She's lying! She's delirious!"
"Cuffs stay on for both of us until we verify," the officer muttered, his eyes narrowing as he looked between us. But before anyone could move, a piercing alarm shrieked from inside the ICU.

Dr. Vance turned pale, shoving past the doors. "Code Blue! Pediatric ICU! Crash cart, now!"
Through the glass, I watched in sheer horror as a dozen medical professionals swarmed Lily’s bed, their hands pressing frantically against her tiny, motionless chest.
