Chapter 5 - The Corporate Web of Deceit

Dawn broke over the Chicago skyline, painting the towering glass skyscrapers in hues of bruised purple and burnt orange. Inside the secure federal interrogation suite on the twelfth floor of the FBI Field Office, the atmosphere was thick with tension and the smell of stale black coffee.

I sat behind a two-way mirror in the observation room, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, sipping hot tea. Beside me stood Ethan and Special Agent Miller—no relation to Marcus, thankfully—who was tossing a thick stack of financial dossiers onto the steel table.

"It goes deeper than we thought, Ethan," Special Agent Miller said, pointing a laser pen at a digital board displaying corporate flowcharts. "Miller & Associates wasn't just an architectural firm. It was a primary front for an international money-laundering ring run by a syndicate out of Zurich. Marcus was their regional director. When Sarah accidentally stumbled onto a flash drive containing the offshore transfer receipts last month, Marcus and Chloe decided she had to be neutralized—starting with the child to break her psychological spirit."

My hands shook around the paper cup. I remembered finding that flash drive hidden inside one of Marcus’s old golf shoe bags three weeks ago. I had asked him about it, and he had casually laughed it off, claiming it was just old tax software. The next day, the flash drive had mysteriously vanished from my desk drawer.

"They thought they could frame me for murder, take the insurance payout, and flee the country tonight," I said, my voice steady despite the lingering terror in my chest.

"They underestimated a mother's instinct, and they severely underestimated federal intelligence," Ethan replied, pulling up a chair beside me. He looked at me with an intensity that made my breath catch. "Sarah... I need to explain why I didn't come back five years ago. It wasn't my choice."

I turned to look at him, the old wounds from the crash throbbing in my memory. "You died, Ethan. I saw the police report. I saw the car burned to a charred skeleton on Route 9. I identified your ring."

"It was a setup," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a rough whisper. "My undercover unit had infiltrated the same Zurich syndicate Marcus is working for now. They found out I was building a federal case against their chief executives. They sabotaged my brakes, rigged the car to explode, and tipped off local corrupt cops. I survived because my backup team intercepted me fifty yards before the crash zone, switched bodies with a John Doe from the county morgue to protect my cover, and rushed me into deep witness protection overnight. I wasn't allowed to contact anyone—not even you, Sarah. If I had reached out, the syndicate would have killed you and your family to get to me."

The revelation hit me like a physical blow. All those years of crying myself to sleep, believing the man I loved had been ripped away from me by a cruel twist of fate—it had all been engineered by the very criminal underworld Marcus had willingly sold his soul to join.

"And when you found out I was pregnant?" I asked, my voice barely audible.

Ethan’s eyes glistened with unshed tears. "I didn't know until three months ago, when my intelligence analysts intercepted a secure biometric data sweep across state medical registries. Lily’s DNA markers flagged in our secure federal database because of my classified genetic profile. I saw her name. I saw Marcus Miller listed as the father on her birth certificate. But I also saw the anomaly in her bloodwork that proved otherwise. I’ve been watching over you from the shadows, Sarah, waiting for the right moment to strike before Marcus could execute his final phase."

Before I could process the staggering weight of his words, the heavy metal door of the observation room swung open. A federal tactical handler stepped in, saluting Ethan.

"Commander, we’ve seized Marcus’s private terminal. Chloe cracked under initial questioning. She’s singing like a canary—handed over the encryption keys to all the offshore accounts, including the primary server in Zurich. The entire board of directors has just been flagged for Interpol arrest warrants."

Ethan stood up, buttoning his trench coat with absolute finality. "Good. Let's go wrap this up."
