Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Serpent

The chaos in the hallway froze for a fraction of a second as the rhythmic beep of Lily’s heart monitor pulsed through the glass, a fragile lifeline echoing in the sterile air. My knees trembled as I pushed myself up from the cold floor, the heavy steel handcuffs still dangling uselessly from my right wrist. The local officer who had cuffed me looked nervously at Ethan, quietly unlocking the cuffs with a sheepish click.
"Get him out of my sight," Ethan ordered the tactical officers, not taking his eyes off a trembling, pale-faced Marcus.
Two tactical agents grabbed Marcus by the arms, hoisting him up like a ragdoll. Chloe let out a shrill scream, trying to scurry down the corridor, but a third agent blocked her path, slapping a pair of zip-ties around her slender wrists with practiced efficiency.
"Ethan! Please! You don't understand!" Marcus wailed, his expensive bravado entirely shattered as he was dragged past me. "Sarah is the one who wanted the money! She planned the whole thing! It was her!"
I didn't flinch. I walked right up to Marcus, my eyes burning with a cold, righteous fury that made him flinch and look away. With the back of my hand, I struck him across the face with every ounce of betrayal, pain, and wrath I had accumulated over five years of living with a monster. The sharp crack echoed down the hallway.
"That's for my daughter," I whispered, my voice shaking with restrained power. "And the rest is coming for you in court."
As the guards hauled Marcus and Chloe away toward the secure elevators, Ethan turned back to me. Up close, the lines on his face were deeper, hardened by years in deep undercover ops, but the warmth in his gray eyes when he looked at me was unmistakably real.
"Sarah," he said softly, reaching out a hand as if he were afraid I might vanish like smoke. "I'm so sorry you had to go through this alone. But we caught them. The feds have been tracking Marcus’s financial network for eighteen months. He thought he was the smartest man in Chicago, but he was just a pawn in a much larger syndicate."
Before I could answer, the ICU doors swung open, and Dr. Vance walked out, looking exhausted but triumphant.
"She's stable," Dr. Vance announced, wiping his brow with a sterile wipe. "The antitoxic infusion neutralized the neurotoxin just in time. She’s sleeping, and her vitals are stabilizing rapidly. But Mrs. Miller—well, Mrs. Miller—we need to talk about her long-term care and protection. That poison wasn't administered by accident. Someone gave it to her systematically over the past week."
My blood ran cold. I looked from Dr. Vance to Ethan. "Systematically? What do you mean?"
"It was in her daily iron supplement chewables," Dr. Vance explained grimly, holding up a small evidence bag containing a half-empty bottle of children's vitamins. "We ran a chemical panel on the remaining gummies in the bottle. Someone injected a slow-acting synthetic paralytic toxin designed to mimic a high-fever infection, culminating in a massive spike tonight. If you hadn't rushed her here when you did..."
Ethan’s jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched in his cheek. "Chloe. She was the only other person with regular access to Sarah’s house and kitchen during the past month. Marcus gave her the key under the guise of corporate file deliveries."

"She was trying to kill my baby to clear the path for their new life," I whispered, the sickening realization settling deep into my bones. Marcus hadn't just cheated on me; he and his mistress had systematically plotted to murder my three-year-old daughter to collect a multi-million-dollar insurance policy Marcus had secretly taken out on Lily three months prior.
Ethan stepped closer, placing a comforting, strong hand on my shoulder. "You're safe now, Sarah. And so is Lily. But we need to move fast. Marcus’s co-conspirators still think their operation is intact, and federal jurisdiction means we can roll up their entire corporate network tonight."
