Six months after the courtroom victory, the Lawson family stood on a sun-drenched hill overlooking the Boston harbor. Thomas had been chosen as the lead architect for the city’s new Children’s Rehabilitation and Aquatic Center—a massive, state-of-the-art public hospital designed entirely for children with mobility challenges.
Today was the official groundbreaking ceremony.
Scores of reporters, city officials, and cheering citizens gathered around the podium. At the front row sat Clare and Elise, the latter wearing a bright yellow dress and a crown of daisies she had woven herself.
Thomas stepped up to the microphone. He looked out at the glittering harbor, then down at his wife and daughter.
“When people ask me what inspired the design for this center,” Thomas spoke into the microphone, his voice carrying across the crowd, “people expect me to talk about engineering specs, sustainable glass, or structural steel. But the truth is simpler than that.”
He pointed directly toward Elise in the front row.
