Chapter 6 - The Trial At St. Michael’s

Spring returned to Boston, green shoots piercing the damp earth just as hope had taken root in the Lawson home.

However, peace is often tested when old ghosts refuse to stay buried.

One afternoon, a formal registered letter arrived at Thomas’s office bearing the letterhead of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. It was an official notification regarding a legal petition filed by a woman named Eleanor Vance—Julian Vance’s estranged sister, who happened to be a high-ranking board member of several regional adoption agencies.

The petition claimed that Thomas and Clare Lawson were “unfit guardians” operating under “severe emotional trauma from the loss of their biological child,” and demanded an emergency judicial review of Elise’s adoption placement, suggesting she be returned to the state foster system.

Thomas’s blood ran cold. This wasn't a bureaucratic error; it was a malicious vendetta orchestrated by Julian Vance to humiliate and destroy him through the person he loved most.

When Thomas brought the letter home, Clare’s face turned pale with dread.

“They want to take her back?” Clare whispered, her voice shaking. “After everything? After she finally feels safe?”

“They won't,” Thomas said, his voice forged in absolute steel. “I will spend every penny I have, I will fight every judge in this state, before I let anyone touch my daughter.”

That evening, Elise overheard them talking in the hallway.

She rolled her wheelchair into the study, her face tight and pale.

“They’re coming for me, aren't they?” Elise asked, her voice dropping into that familiar, terrifying quietness. “Because I’m too much work. Because people always change their minds.”

Thomas rushed across the room and knelt before her, taking her small hands in his.

“Elise, look at me,” Thomas said fiercely. “Listen to my voice. Nobody is taking you anywhere. You are a Lawson. You belong in this house, and no court, no angry rival, and no piece of paper can ever change that. Do you understand?”

Elise searched his eyes, looking for the doubt, looking for the hesitation she had seen in three previous families when things got complicated.

She found nothing except absolute, unshakeable devotion.

“Okay,” Elise whispered, a single tear rolling down her cheek. “I believe you.”
