PART 7: Ambush in the Dark

"Stay behind me," Bruce ordered instantly, drawing me behind his broad frame as he positioned himself between us and the apartment door.

The shadows of three men appeared through the frosted glass of the front door. Before Bruce could reach for his phone, the doorknob jiggled aggressively, and a heavy boot slammed into the wood, splintering the lock and swinging the door wide open.

Three men in tactical black gear stepped into the room. They weren't police officers—their uniforms lacked insignia, and their faces were partially concealed by black balaclavas. One of them held a suppressed firearm pointed directly at us.

"Give me the box," the lead man demanded, his voice deep and raspy. "Hand over what you just found, and no one gets hurt."

I gasped, clutching Bruce’s jacket. "Who sent you? Agatha is in jail!"

"Agatha isn't the only one involved in this syndicate, lady," the man snarled, stepping forward. "The people who fund the foundation don't want those files seeing the light of day. Drop the flash drive on the floor right now."

Bruce didn't flinch. His expression hardened into a cold, terrifying mask of absolute calm.

"You think you can walk into a building in San Jose and threaten me?" Bruce asked, his voice dangerously quiet.

The gunman laughed mockingly. "We don't care who you are, billionaire. In five seconds, you're both just tragic victims of a botched robbery."

He raised the barrel of the gun directly toward Bruce's chest.

My heart stopped. Without thinking, I lunged forward to shield Bruce, but before I could move, the sound of shattered glass echoed from the window behind the intruders.

Two of Bruce's private security operatives, who had been tailing us discreetly from outside, crashed through the grime-covered windows, tackling the lead gunman to the floor before he could pull the trigger.

The apartment erupted into chaos. A fierce scuffle broke out in the narrow hallway. Shouts, grunts, and the sound of bodies slamming against the concrete walls echoed through the empty floor. Bruce pushed me firmly behind a concrete pillar, stepping into the fray to assist his men with practiced, cold efficiency—proving that his life hadn't been entirely confined to corporate boardrooms.

Within thirty seconds, all three intruders were pinned to the floor, disarmed and zip-tied.

One of Bruce's guards pinned the lead gunman's neck against the floor with his boot. "Mr. Hall, you okay?"

Bruce straightened his jacket, brushing a speck of dust off his sleeve, his breathing barely accelerated. "I'm fine. Call federal marshals. Tell them we have the operatives linked to the international syndicate operating under the Crestview Foundation."

"Right away, sir," the guard said, pulling out a satellite radio.

I stood frozen against the pillar, my legs shaking so badly I slid down to the floor, burying my face in my hands as the adrenaline finally wore off, leaving a wave of profound exhaustion.

Bruce knelt beside me, gently taking my hands away from my face.

"It's over, Gabrielle," he said softly, wiping a tear from my cheek with his thumb. "The federal marshals are taking over. The syndicate has nowhere left to run."

May you like

"I'm just... so tired," I whispered, leaning my head against his shoulder.

"I know," Bruce whispered back, wrapping his arms around me and lifting me effortlessly into his arms. "Let's take you home to your girls. You never have to look back again."
