PART 3: Secrets Beneath the Surface

The next morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a golden glow over the Pacific Ocean visible from Bruce’s estate. Despite the luxurious surroundings, I barely slept. Every creak of the hallway floorboards made my heart jump, fearing that Agatha’s men or social services would burst through the door to take Olivia, Erica, and Holly away.

Clara, Bruce's assistant, brought a selection of fresh clothes for me and the girls. When I looked at the tags, my breath caught—the dresses were from high-end boutiques, the kind of clothes I hadn't worn since before David and I got married.

"Mr. Hall wants you all to join him in the solarium for breakfast," Clara said gently, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry about the legal side of things. Mr. Hall’s legal team has already frozen the Crestview Foundation’s assets pending a complete federal audit."

"Frozen them?" I asked, stunned. "Can he do that?"

"When you are the primary financial pillar of a non-profit and you discover structural embezzlement, you can do quite a lot," Clara smiled knowingly.

When I walked into the glass-walled solarium with my daughters, Bruce was sitting at a glass table, reviewing a thick stack of printed financial documents. Olivia, Erica, and Holly immediately ran toward a large spread of fresh pastries, fruit, and pancakes, their eyes wide with excitement. Holly giggled as Clara handed her a glass of warm apple juice.

Bruce looked up, his expression softening as he watched the girls. "Did they sleep well?"

"Better than they have in years," I murmured, pulling out a chair opposite him. "Thank you, Mr. Hall. For everything. But... what happens next? Agatha won't just sit back and let her foundation be audited. She's ruthless."

Bruce set the documents aside and poured a cup of black coffee. "Let's call her Agatha for now, but drop the 'Mr. Hall'—call me Bruce."

He slid a tablet across the table. The screen displayed a complex web of corporate entities, shell companies, and wire transfers.

"Last night, after the police left, my forensic accountants dug into Crestview's records," Bruce explained, leaning forward. "Agatha claimed you stole three million dollars. But the truth is far darker. Over the past five years, exactly three million dollars has been systematically siphoned out of the foundation's emergency relief fund and funneled into private accounts. And none of those accounts belong to you."

"Whose do they belong to?" I asked, my breath hitching.

"David's," Bruce said quietly.

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. I gripped the edge of the table, my mind racing backward through the years of abuse, the sudden death of my husband, and the endless debt Agatha claimed he had left behind.

"David?" I choked out. "That's impossible. David died with nothing. Agatha said his business ventures failed, that he left us bankrupt, and that's why I had to work off his debts as a maid in her house."

"It was all a lie," Bruce said, his eyes filled with a heavy, protective anger. "David wasn't a failure. He was helping his mother embezzle funds from the foundation. But six years ago, right before he died, he tried to back out. He threatened to go to the authorities."

My chest tightened until I couldn't breathe. "Are you saying... his car accident..."

"The brakes failed on a remote mountain pass," Bruce finished grimly. "The official report called it a tragic mechanical failure. But my investigators are reopening the file today. Agatha didn't just enslave you to punish you for not having a grandson. She kept you under her thumb because you were the legal inheritor of David's estate—an estate that includes millions in hidden assets."

Before I could process the terrifying weight of his words, my phone buzzed on the table. It was an unknown number.

With trembling fingers, I slid the screen to answer.

Agatha’s venomous voice hissed through the speaker. "You think you're safe with that billionaire, Gabrielle? If you don't drop the audit and sign over full custody of my granddaughters by sundown, I will release photos of your children to the press, and I will make sure you spend the rest of your life behind bars for murder."

The line went dead.

I sat frozen, the phone slipping from my numb fingers and clattering against the glass table. Holly looked up, startled by the noise, her lower lip trembling.

Bruce’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He reached across the table, picked up my phone, and calmly placed it in his pocket.

"Pack a bag, Gabrielle," Bruce said, his voice cold and resolute. "We're going to Palm Springs."
