Chapter 6 - The Siege of Coral Gables

The night air of Coral Gables was shattered by the screech of tires outside the heavy iron gates of the Cross estate. Victor Hale had been a rat, but he was a well-connected rat. His conspirators within the council—men who stood to lose millions if Mateo’s true direct heirs took control—had mobilized quickly. They wanted the silver locket destroyed, and with it, any proof of Elena’s legitimacy.

Damian moved with terrifying efficiency. He ordered the estate's heavy steel shutters to lower, sealing the mansion into an impenetrable bunker. His loyal men took positions along the perimeter walls.

"Stay in the panic room with Sofia," Damian instructed Elena, unlocking a hidden door behind a bookcase in the library. "No matter what you hear outside, do not come out until I open this door myself."

"Damian, wait!" Elena grabbed his arm, her eyes filled with fear—not just for herself, but for the cousin she had only just met. "Don't let them destroy what's left of this family."

Damian looked at her, seeing the same fierce honor that his grandfather Mateo had written about in his private journals. "I won't," he promised.

Inside the reinforced panic room, Sofia woke up from the low rumble of the steel shutters. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, and looked around the high-tech room filled with security monitors displaying camera feeds from around the estate.

"Mama? Are we playing hide and seek again?" Sofia asked softly.

Elena sat beside her daughter, pulling her into a tight hug. "Something like that, my sweet angel. Just a little longer."

On the central monitor, Elena watched in breathless anxiety as Damian confronted the men at the front courtyard. Standing beside Damian was Mrs. Calloway, the old housekeeper from the yacht, who had ridden with them from the marina. Mrs. Calloway stepped forward in front of the armed dissenters, holding an old leather-bound ledger above her head.

"Put your weapons down, all of you!" the old housekeeper's voice rang out through the mansion's intercom system. "I served Mateo Cross for twenty years! I was there the night Rosa was forced to flee! I kept the ledger of the secret accounts Mateo set aside for her! The proof isn't just in the locket—it’s in the blood records and bank vaults kept in Switzerland!"

The men at the gate hesitated. The leader of the faction, an elder council member named Marcus, stepped forward under the courtyard lights. "If the girl is truly Mateo's blood, why did she hide for fifty years?!"

"Because you would have killed her!" Mrs. Calloway shouted back defiance. "Just as you tried to frame her granddaughter tonight on the yacht! But justice has a long memory, Marcus!"

Sofia stepped up to the monitor, staring intently at the screen. She noticed something on the tactical display that the men outside were ignoring.

"Mama, look," Sofia pointed to a red light flashing on the security perimeter monitor near the side garage. "The scale is tipping over there."

Elena looked closely. While Marcus was distracting Damian at the front gates, a small team of Victor’s men was attempting to breach the side entrance using heavy hydraulic tools to force open the security doors.

Sofia didn't hesitate. She ran to the panic room's internal comms button—a big red button labeled Master Intercom—and slammed her small palm onto it.
