Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

News of the discovery traveled fast through the underground networks of Miami. While Damian immediately ordered The Obsidian Rose to return to shore, he knew that revealing Elena and Sofia's true identity put them in immediate danger. The syndicate was not a simple family business; it was an intricate web of allies and enemies who had profited for fifty-seven years off the exile of Mateo Cross's true bloodline.

Upon arriving at Damian’s private estate—a heavily guarded fortress in Coral Gables—Elena and Sofia were given a wing of the mansion that dwarfed their entire apartment building. For the first time in her life, Elena woke up in a bed with silk sheets, without the groan of apartment 4C's ceiling fan overhead.

Yet, she could not sleep.

She sat in the grand library, watching Sofia sleep soundly on a plush velvet sofa, her battered kitchen scale tucked securely under her arm like a teddy bear.

Damian walked in quietly, holding two cups of warm tea. He handed one to Elena and sat across from her.

"You look terrified, Elena," Damian said softly. "You're safe here. I give you my word."

"I spent my whole life surviving, Damian," Elena replied, looking down at her hands, which were finally still. "I spent every day calculating pennies, worrying if the landlord would lock us out, if Sofia would have an asthma attack while I was at work. Now, in a single night, you tell me I belong to a family built on violence and shadows. How do I protect my daughter from a world like this?"

"You don't have to protect her alone anymore," Damian said, his voice thick with emotion. "For fifty-seven years, my side of the family lived on wealth that rightfully belonged to your grandmother Rosa. The people who drove her away—the legacy of the rival lieutenants—still hold power in our council. They won't accept you easily. They see you as a threat to their money."

"I don't want your money, Damian," Elena said fiercely. "I just want my daughter to be safe and healthy!"

"To keep her safe, you must take what is yours," Damian insisted gently. "If you run away now, they will always hunt you to ensure the bloodline claim is dead. But if you stand with me, if we reclaim the family council together, we can end the violence once and for all. I want to clean this family's hands, Elena. I've wanted to for years. But I needed a reason. You and Sofia... you are that reason."

Before Elena could answer, the security phone on the library desk rang violently. Damian picked it up, his face darkening as he listened to his chief of security.

"What is it?" Elena asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Victor's allies," Damian said, stepping toward the window and pulling back the heavy curtain. In the distance, near the gates of the estate, headlights flickered through the palms. "They know about the locket. They know Mateo's true heir has returned. And they are coming to challenge the lineage before the council meets tomorrow."
