Chapter 7 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Six months later, spring brought a renewed sense of life and vibrant energy to the city. NexusTech, now successfully rebranded as Sterling Innovation Labs, was thriving under new leadership, focusing on ethical AI development and sustainable green technology—values that Mark had always dismissed in favor of quick profits and flashy marketing.
I had officially returned to an active leadership role within Sterling Global Holdings, stepping into the position of Executive Vice President of Strategic Investments. For too long, I had taken a backseat to support a man whose ego couldn't handle sharing the spotlight. Now, unburdened by dead weight, my career soared to new heights. Industry publications featured my portrait on their covers, hailing the brilliant restructuring strategy that saved millions in tech capital while weeding out toxic corporate culture.
Leo was growing into a bright, curious toddler. His first steps were taken across the plush white rugs of our penthouse living room, cheered on by my doting parents, loyal friends, and the dedicated team who had protected us during our darkest hour.
Mark, meanwhile, had become a ghost of his former self. Stripped of his wealth, his status, and his social standing, he was forced to move back into a modest, rundown suburban apartment on the far outskirts of the city. Without his flashy cars, designer suits, and endless supply of corporate credit cards, the so-called "friends" who had once swarmed around him vanished like morning mist. Even Sarah had long since packed her bags and moved back to her hometown in disgrace, realizing that Mark had nothing left to offer her.

Occasionally, through mutual acquaintances or legal updates, I heard whispers of Mark trying to secure entry-level programming gigs, only to find his reputation thoroughly tarnished by the corporate fraud investigations and his public fall from grace. He had tried to petition the court twice for visitation rights with Leo, but each petition was swiftly and decisively dismissed by judges who reviewed the ironclad evidence of his abusive threats and abandonment.
He had traded a life of unimaginable luxury, genuine love, and absolute security for a fleeting moment of selfish betrayal. And he had paid the ultimate price for his arrogance.
