Chapter 8 - The Lion’s Reckoning

The City Justice Center was packed with reporters, camera crews, and heavily armed security personnel when the armored Moretti motorcade arrived.
Arthur Vance was already standing on the marble steps, surrounded by his legal team, wearing a tailored navy suit and his signature fake, winning smile for the press cameras. He looked every bit the polished politician—untouchable, aristocratic, and arrogant.
When Daario stepped out of the vehicle, clad in an immaculate black suit, holding Sophia’s hand on his right and walking alongside Margaret on his left, the press corps went wild. Flashes blinded the steps.
Vance’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second when his eyes met Daario’s. He watched as Margaret—the shelter director he had tried to intimidate—walked with absolute grace and confidence beside the city’s most feared man.
They entered Judge Henderson’s private courtroom. The heavy doors slammed shut, cutting off the deafening noise of the media outside.
Judge Henderson sat behind his bench, looking nervous, sweating beneath his black robes. "This is a closed administrative hearing regarding emergency custody of the minor, Sophia Rossi," Henderson began, his voice tight. "Mr. Vance has filed an emergency claim as the biological grandfather, citing—"
"Mr. Vance has no claim," Daario’s lead attorney interrupted, stepping forward with a thick leather binder. "Nor does this court have jurisdiction to grant him one."
"Nonsense!" Vance sneered, speaking up from the defense table. "I am her flesh and blood! This man is a known organized crime figure! And Miss Walsh is an opportunistic administrative clerk who has conspired with him!"
Margaret stepped forward, her voice clear, bell-like, and carrying the absolute thunder of truth. "I am the Director of St. Catherine’s, Mr. Vance. And I have the sworn testimony of Elena Vance—written before her murder—detailing how you abandoned her, stripped her of her rights, and ordered her death when she refused to let you sell off her daughter’s future!"
"Lies! Slander!" Vance shouted, turning to the judge. "Dismiss this absurdity, Henderson! Sign the custody order to me immediately!"
Judge Henderson raised his gavel, his hands shaking. "The court finds—"
"The court finds nothing," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the back of the room.
The heavy oak doors swung open. Four Federal Agents in dark blue jackets entered, accompanied by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District.
Vance stood frozen. "What is the meaning of this?!"
The US Attorney stepped forward, unsealing a massive red folder. "Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, federal racketeering, wire fraud, and the attempted assassination of federal witnesses."
"You can't prove any of this!" Vance roared, his aristocratic composure shattering into ugly panic.
"We don't need to prove it today," Daario said smoothly, stepping up until he was standing face-to-face with the man who had ordered his daughter’s death. "Isabella already proved it. Every offshore account, every hitman’s payment, every illegal shipping manifesto... she backed it all up on federal servers twelve hours before you tampered with her car."
Vance gasped, looking at Daario in sheer horror. "You... she..."
"My daughter was smarter than you," Daario whispered, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that made Vance turn pale. "And she was loved. Something a coward like you will never understand."
The Federal Agents moved in fast, snapping heavy iron handcuffs around Vance’s wrists. As they dragged the screaming politician out of the courtroom, Judge Henderson slumped back into his chair, realizing his own arrest was only minutes away.
Margaret looked at Daario, tears of overwhelming relief filling her eyes.

Sophia tugged gently on Daario’s sleeve. "Is the bad man gone?"
Daario dropped to one knee, looking at the little girl. He gently took her small hand into his massive palm. "Yes, little one. The bad man is gone forever."
