Chapter 7 - A Web of Steel and Silk

Over the next seventy-two hours, the Moretti Estate became the war room for the most sophisticated legal and public attack the city had ever seen.

Daario’s high-priced defense attorneys worked alongside Margaret’s network of child advocacy lawyers, building an ironclad emergency custody petition. Meanwhile, Daario’s intelligence team coordinated directly with a specialized squad of Federal prosecutors out of Washington—men who owed no allegiance to Arthur Vance or local city politics.

Through it all, an unexpected rhythm settled into the estate.

Margaret and Daario found themselves spending late nights at the heavy oak desk in the study, reviewing papers, signing affidavits, and quietly drinking wine by the fireplace while Sophia slept soundly in the adjoining bedroom.

"You aren't what I expected," Margaret admitted late one evening, swirling the dark red wine in her glass.

Daario looked up from a stack of court filings. "What did you expect? A brute in a tailored suit?"

"Something like that," she admitted, smiling slightly. "A man who solved every problem with a bullet."

Daario stared into the fire, his expression reflective. "I was that man for a long time. When you live in the mud, you forget what clean water feels like. Isabella was my clean water. She kept me tied to humanity." He looked across at Margaret, his tone softening. "And now... you're doing the same thing."

Margaret felt her breath catch. "Daario..."

"I watch you with her, Margaret," he said quietly, setting his glass down and walking around the desk to stand before her. "You give her the love my daughter wanted to give her. You didn't run when the bullets started flying. You stood your ground."

"She’s just a child," Margaret whispered, her heart beating fast as he stepped closer. "She deserves a world where she doesn't have to be afraid."

"So do you," Daario murmured. He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a loose lock of her auburn hair behind her ear. His touch was remarkably light for a hand that carried so much power. "I spent months feeling like my life ended the day Isabella died. But when I saw you in that rain at her grave... standing up to me, defying me..."

"You thought I was arrogant," she murmured, a small laugh escaping her lips.

"I thought you were the braves woman I had ever met," he corrected softly. "And I realized... I didn't want to die in the dark anymore."

Their eyes met, holding a quiet, intense promise that went far beyond legal contracts or temporary alliances. Before either could speak further, Marco knocked sharply on the heavy oak door.

"Don Daario," Marco announced, stepping inside with a grave expression. "The emergency hearing has been set for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. Judge Henderson’s private chambers."

"Henderson?" Margaret gasped, her face going pale. "Henderson is Arthur Vance’s personal ally! He took thousands in campaign contributions from Vance’s real estate holdings!"

Daario’s eyes hardened, but a cold, triumphant smile touched his lips. "I know."

Margaret stared at him, confused. "If Henderson is corrupt, why let him handle the hearing?"

May you like

"Because," Daario said, pulling out his phone and activating a secure line, "a corrupt judge making a illegal ruling on live federal wiretaps is the final trap we need."

He looked at Margaret, his hand reaching out to wrap firmly around hers. "Tomorrow, Arthur Vance steps into a cage he spent thirty years building."
