Chapter 8 - A New Horizon

With our lives firmly back on track, professional opportunities began to knock again—this time on our own terms.
The Boston music education program, recognizing the unjust circumstances under which I had been forced to leave early, officially invited me back to complete my fellowship as a guest lecturer the following summer.
At first, a familiar wave of anxiety washed over me at the thought of traveling again. I looked at James across the kitchen table, doubt flickering in my eyes.
"You don't have to go," James said immediately, reading my expression. "We can turn it down. Your place is here."
I looked at Sophia, who was busy building a towering castle out of wooden blocks on the rug, chattering happily to her stuffed bear.
"No," I said, a new strength settling into my voice. "I am not going to let fear dictate our lives anymore. Besides, things are different now. We are different now."
When I approached Sophia to talk about the invitation, kneeling beside her castle, she looked up at me with bright, intelligent eyes.
"Are you going away, Mama?" she asked, a slight quiver in her lower lip.
"Only for a short weekend, sweetie. And this time, you and Daddy are coming with me. We are going to take a family trip to Boston, stay in a wonderful hotel right by the park, and eat all the ice cream you want."
Her face lit up instantly. "Really? Can we see the big ducks?"

"The Boston Public Garden ducks are waiting for us," I laughed, kissing her forehead.
The trip that summer was nothing short of magical. Walking through the historic streets of Boston with James holding my hand and Sophia skipping ahead to chase pigeons, I felt the last lingering ghosts of the past dissolve into the summer air. I delivered my lecture to a standing ovation, but the true victory was walking back to the hotel and seeing my daughter sleeping peacefully, completely untroubled by nightmares.
