Chapter 2 - The Fifteen-Year Secret

Detective Chen’s voice crackled through the phone speaker, heavy with gravity.

"Fifteen years, Nicole. The entries start long before your sister ever met Kevin."

I held Sophia tighter as she slept fitfully against my shoulder in the hospital armchair. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor in the corner matched the frantic drumming of my own heart.

"What are they about?" I whispered, careful not to wake my daughter.

"We are still analyzing the handwriting and digital timestamps," Sarah replied. "The hidden phone contains text messages, deleted call logs, and encrypted chats dating back several months. But the physical diary... it documents a pattern of psychological control, financial manipulation, and deep-seated resentment. Your sister has been keeping track of your life milestones like a ledger of debts."

A cold chill settled in my chest. I thought of all the times Amy had asked for money, the times she had moved into my spare rooms, the casual remarks she made whenever I received a promotion or a scholarship. I had always written them off as sibling rivalry.

"Who is she texting on that second phone?" I asked.

"That is the most disturbing part," Sarah said. "It is not Kevin. The messages are with someone else. Someone who helped orchestrate the chaos in that house."

When Detective Chen arrived at the hospital an hour later, she brought a thick folder of transcribed excerpts. As I turned the pages, the foundation of my entire life began to fracture. The diary entries did not just reveal a resentful sister; they revealed a meticulous plot. Amy had not merely volunteered to watch Sophia out of familial love. She had maneuvered for months to get me out of the state. She had orchestrated my invitation to the Boston teaching program through a mutual acquaintance in the arts council, ensuring I would be thousands of miles away when her plan went into motion.

And Kevin? Kevin was not the mastermind. He was a pawn who had outlived his usefulness—or perhaps, a co-conspirator whose greed had turned on Amy at the last minute.

"Why?" I muttered, staring at a page where Amy had scrawled calculations of my savings account alongside plans for guardianship transfer. "Why would she want Sophia?"

Sarah looked at me with deep sorrow. "It is not just about Sophia, Nicole. Look at the financial provisions in your late parents' trust. Who becomes the primary beneficiary of the estate and your insurance policy if you and James are both out of the picture?"

My breath caught. James was overseas, but our joint policies and my individual teacher benefits named my family as secondary trustees. If something happened to me, and James was unreachable... Amy stood to inherit everything.
