Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Trial

The trial began on a crisp November morning.
The courtroom was packed with media and onlookers drawn by the bizarre and chilling nature of the case: a jealous sister orchestrating an elaborate domestic horror show to steal a mother's life and child.
Amy sat at the defense table, flanked by a court-appointed public defender who looked entirely exhausted by her client's shifting lies. Amy no longer looked like the helpless victim she had pretended to be at the hospital. Dressed in an orange jumpsuit, her hair pulled back harshly, she carried an air of defiant resentment. She refused to look in our direction, keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the judge's bench.
When I took the stand, the courtroom fell into absolute silence.
I recounted the phone calls from Boston, the strange silences in Sophia’s voice, the horror of walking into that wrecked hallway, and the heartbreaking moment my daughter hid from me, believing I was going to strike her.
The prosecutor, a sharp-eyed woman named Ms. Vance, displayed the diary entries and the digital transcripts on the overhead monitors. The public gallery gasped as the text messages between Amy and Kevin scrolled past, detailing how they planned to isolate Sophia from everyone who loved her.
When it was Kevin’s turn to testify, he laid bare the entire conspiracy, pointing a trembling finger directly at Amy.
"She engineered every bit of it," Kevin testified, his voice cracking under cross-examination. "I was just a tool to her. She told me Nicole was a thief who stole our parents' legacy, and that we deserved what was rightfully hers."
Amy’s defense attorney tried desperately to argue diminished capacity and severe emotional distress, claiming Amy was suffering from a lifelong inferiority complex that warped her judgment. But the mountain of premeditated evidence—the timeline, the hidden phone, the financial blueprints—completely demolished any narrative of temporary insanity.
During a recess, Detective Chen approached us in the hallway.

"The jury is going to deliberate quickly," Sarah said, offering a reassuring smile. "You handled yourself brilliantly on the stand, Nicole. Your daughter is lucky to have you fighting for her."
"I just want justice, Sarah," I replied. "And then, peace."
