Chapter 9 - A New Dawn at Bedford

Six months later, the Marlowe Estate was no longer known as the silent, terrifying fortress behind the iron gates.
The local children from the Bedford community were invited twice a week to use the estate’s expansive gardens for their weekend art and music classes. A foundation was established in memory of Clara and Lily Marlowe, dedicated to providing advanced medical care and financial support for families struggling with chronic illnesses—with Claire Bennett appointed as its executive director.
Adrian stood on the grand front porch, watching Lucy and a dozen other children chase colorful butterflies across the manicured lawn. The little girl was wearing a brand-new pair of yellow rain boots, splashing happily in a fountain that had been recently repaired.
Marcus walked up beside him, holding a stack of corporate correspondence.
“The restructuring of Marlowe Enterprises is complete, sir,” Marcus reported with a respectful nod. “Vance’s assets have been fully seized and redirected into the Clara & Lily Foundation. He was sentenced to life without parole yesterday morning.”
Adrian looked out over the sunlit gardens, feeling a profound sense of peace settle over his chest.
“Good,” Adrian murmured. “Let’s leave the past where it belongs, Marcus.”
“Yes, sir,” Marcus smiled. “What’s on the agenda for this afternoon?”
Adrian looked toward the lawn, where Lucy had spotted him and was currently waving frantically, yelling, “Mr. Knight! Come play tag!”

Adrian adjusted his jacket, a genuine, unforced smile breaking across his face.
“I believe,” Adrian said, stepping off the porch and heading down the stone steps toward the grass, “I have an urgent appointment with a bluebird.”
