Chapter 7 - Returning to the Light

Two weeks later, the front pages of international newspapers flashed the breaking news: Maltese-Monegasque authorities arrest fugitive billionaire Julian Vance for multi-million-dollar arson and double homicide linked to the tragic Marlowe Estate fire.

In Bedford, New York, the iron gates of the Marlowe mansion were opened wide for the first time in four years.

Adrian walked through the front entrance hall, carrying a small, wrapped box. The morning sunlight streamed through the tall stained-glass windows, illuminating the gleaming marble floor where a little girl in yellow rain boots had once stood and sung about a bluebird.

In the drawing room, Claire Bennett was supervising a team of decorators who were finally removing the heavy gray cover from the grand piano. Her mother, June Bennett, looked healthy and radiant, sitting comfortably in a plush armchair with a cup of herbal tea, laughing softly as little Lucy chased a mechanical puppy across the Persian rug.

When Lucy saw Adrian enter, she immediately dropped her toy and ran toward him, her little yellow rain boots squeaking against the polished wood.

“Mr. Knight!” she announced happily, stopping right in front of him. “Mommy says we get to live in the little guest house by the garden forever, and Grandma’s blood machine isn't scary anymore because the new doctors gave her magic medicine!”

Adrian crouched down, placing the small box into her tiny hands.

“I brought you something, Lucy,” Adrian said gently. “For keeping my floors clean when I wasn't paying attention.”

Lucy carefully tore open the wrapping paper. Inside was a music box made of polished mahogany, carved to look like a little house with a window. When she wound the key on the bottom, it didn't play a mournful tune. It played a sweet, clear melody—the exact notes of the bluebird song.

Lucy’s eyes lit up with absolute wonder. She hugged the music box to her chest, then threw her small arms around Adrian’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

Adrian froze for a fraction of a second, his hands hovering awkwardly in the air. Then, slowly, carefully, he wrapped his arms around the child and held her close.
