Chapter 8 - The Music Returns

That evening, the east wing of the mansion—rebuilt and restored from the ashes of the past—was filled with sound for the first time in 1,460 days.
Adrian sat on the bench before the grand piano in the drawing room. The gray cover was gone, folded neatly in a closet. His fingers hovered over the ivory keys, hesitating. For four years, every time he touched a piano, he heard the crackle of flames and the silence of the cemetery.
From the doorway, Claire stood with her arm around her mother, watching him with quiet respect. Little Lucy sat cross-legged on the floor nearby, hugging her new music box.
Adrian closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
He pressed down the first key.
A pure, resonant chord filled the room. It wasn't a song of mourning. It was a song of release. He began to play a gentle, flowing melody—the lullaby his wife Clara used to play for Lily when she was a baby.

As the music swelled through the high-ceilinged room, the shadows that had haunted the mansion for half a decade seemed to lift, chased away by the warmth of living hearts.
Adrian didn't cry. He didn't need to. The grief was still there, a scar on his soul, but it no longer defined him. He was a man who had faced the dark, found the truth, and allowed an innocent child to open a window he had bolted shut against the world.
