PART 4: Arrival at the Iron Gates

By late afternoon, the sleek black town car idling outside Clara’s apartment building drew curious, fearful glances from every neighbor on the block. Drivers of Weston Kade's caliber did not pull up to tenement housing unless someone was about to disappear permanently.
Clara packed their meager belongings into two canvas duffel bags. Lily clutched her patched rag doll in one arm and a brand-new, oversized plush bear that had been found tucked inside one of the morning's delivery boxes in the other.
When Clara opened the apartment door, a tall man in a dark suit was standing in the hallway. It wasn't Weston Kade, but Julian, whose expression was a mask of polite efficiency.
"Mrs. Vance, I presume," Julian said, offering a slight nod. "The vehicle is ready. Mr. Kade prefers promptness."
"I... yes. We're ready," Clara replied, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to remain steady.
Julian’s gaze shifted down to Lily, who stared up at him with wide, unblinking eyes. For a fraction of a second, Julian’s professional facade wavered, a flash of deep, aching sorrow crossing his features before he quickly masked it. He opened his hand, revealing a small, brightly wrapped peppermint candy.
"For you, young lady," Julian said softly.
Lily looked up at her mother for permission, and when Clara nodded, the little girl took the candy with a shy smile. "Thank you, mister."
The ride to the Kade estate took nearly forty minutes, taking them away from the crowded, gray tenements and deep into the wealthy, tree-lined suburbs. When the towering iron gates swung open automatically, revealing a sprawling manor surrounded by manicured lawns and ancient oaks, Lily pressed her face against the car window, gasping in wonder.
"It's a castle, Mommy! Look at the towers!"
Clara remained silent, her stomach tied in knots. When the car came to a smooth halt in front of the grand entrance, Julian escorted them through the heavy double doors and into a brightly lit, beautifully appointed guest suite located in the west wing of the mansion.
"This will be your quarters for the time being," Julian explained, setting their bags on the plush carpet. "A chef will bring dinner up at seven. You are not required to report to work until Monday. Mr. Kade has... specific instructions regarding your arrival."
"Will I see him?" Clara asked, unable to stop herself. "Mr. Kade, I mean. I want to thank him—or ask him why..."
May you like
"Mr. Kade does not offer explanations," Julian interrupted gently, though his eyes held a strange intensity. "He offers solutions. Make yourselves comfortable, Clara. You are safe here. No one will ever harm you or your daughter within these gates."
With that, Julian bowed and left the room, locking the heavy door behind him—not to imprison them, Clara realized, but to protect them from the rest of the world.
