Chapter 9 - The Promise of Tomorrow

It was Mia’s fourteenth birthday, and the backyard of the Porter home was filled with laughter, music, and the delicious smell of barbecued burgers.
Marcus was at the grill, wearing a hilarious apron that said The Grill Father, while his wife Sarah chatted with Clara near the picnic table. A group of Mia’s school friends were gathered around the patio, laughing and taking photos.
Michael stood by the back door, watching the scene.
He looked at Mia, who was laughing with her friends, her dark hair shining in the afternoon sun. She was healthy, happy, and confident. The memory of her lying in that hospital bed, fighting for breath while her family tore itself apart, felt like a lifetime ago.
Clara walked over to him, slipping her hand into his. "You're doing that thing again."
"What thing?" Michael smiled down at her.
"The thing where you look at everyone and get all emotional," she teased gently.
"I can't help it," he said, pulling her close. "I’m just incredibly grateful."
He reached into his pocket and felt the small, velvet box that had been sitting there for three weeks. He had spoken with Mia about it first, wanting her blessing. Mia’s response had been a tearful hug and a enthusiastic, "What took you so long, Dad?"
"Clara," Michael said, his voice turning serious but incredibly tender. "Walk with me for a minute?"
He led her to the quiet side of the yard, near the beautiful desert garden they had planted together. The purple sage was in full bloom, filling the air with a sweet, wild scent.
He turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his.
"Three years ago, my life was in pieces," Michael said, looking directly into her warm brown eyes. "I thought my job was just to survive, to keep Mia safe, and to keep putting one foot in front of the other. But then you walked into my shop, and you showed me that life could be so much more than just surviving. You brought joy, warmth, and a future I didn't think was possible for us."
Clara’s eyes welled with tears. "Michael..."
Michael dropped to one knee, pulling the small black box from his pocket. He opened it to reveal a beautiful, simple diamond ring that caught the golden Arizona light.
"Clara, will you marry me? Will you join our family and let us love you for the rest of our lives?"
Clara gasped, a tear escaping and running down her cheek. She didn't hesitate for a single second. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him up into a deep, joyful embrace.
"Yes! Yes, Michael, a thousand times yes!"
From the patio, a loud cheer erupted. Michael looked over to see Mia jumping up and down, clapping her hands, with Marcus and Sarah whistling loudly.

Mia ran over, throwing her arms around both of them. "We're a family!" she cried, her voice filled with pure, unadulterated joy.
"We always have been, Peanut," Michael whispered, holding his daughter and his future wife close. "We always will be."
