Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the Foundation

The next three months were a whirlwind of legal battles, but for Michael, the hard part was over. The moment he cut the toxic influence of Lorraine and Tessa out of his life, a strange, beautiful peace settled over his home.

With the help of Marcus and a forensic accountant hired by Evelyn, they managed to untangle the financial mess. While a significant portion of the $230,000 had been spent by Lorraine on a lavish lifestyle, they were able to claw back nearly $90,000 from the frozen accounts of L&T Consulting.

Furthermore, Evelyn’s strategy worked perfectly. Faced with the very real threat of federal wire fraud charges, Tessa cracked. Against her mother’s furious demands, she fired Lorraine’s high-priced lawyer and hired an independent attorney.

Within eight weeks, Tessa signed a comprehensive settlement agreement.

She waived all rights to the garage, the marital home, and Michael’s retirement accounts. She granted Michael sole legal and physical custody of Mia, accepting a highly structured, supervised visitation schedule of just four hours every other Saturday, to be conducted at a family counseling center.

Michael felt no malice toward Tessa, only a profound sadness for the woman she had chosen to become under her mother's thumb. But his priority was, and always would be, Mia.

With the legal drama settling, Michael turned his focus to his daughter.

"Daddy, look!" Mia laughed, running through the backyard of their home.

Michael had spent the weekend painting her bedroom her favorite color—lavender—and building a custom wooden bookshelf shaped like a tree. He was sitting on the back patio, sipping a cold lemonade, watching her play with Buster. Marcus and Sarah had gifted the golden retriever puppy to Mia for her ninth birthday, and the two had become inseparable.

Mia’s health had improved dramatically. Without the constant, low-level stress of her mother and grandmother’s screaming matches, her asthma attacks had decreased significantly. She was eating better, sleeping through the night, and her laughter was a constant, beautiful melody in the house.

"I see you, Peanut!" Michael called out, smiling. "Don't run too fast, take a breath!"

"I’m okay, Daddy!" she shouted back, her cheeks rosy and full of life. "Buster is tired, not me!"

Michael looked down at the financial report on his lap. The shop was recovering. With the stolen funds stopped, the garage was actually turning a massive profit. He had been able to give Marcus a well-deserved raise, hire an additional mechanic to lighten his own workload, and fully fund Mia’s college savings account.

He was no longer working seventy hours a week. He was home by five every evening. He made spaghetti for dinner, helped Mia with her math homework, and tucked her into bed every single night.

They were surviving. No—they were thriving.
