Chapter 3 - THE EXPOSURE

For three agonizing seconds, nobody dared to breathe.

Then, Vanessa desperately tried to salvage the wreckage of her social standing. She stepped forward, her hands fluttering in the air in a pathetic, frantic attempt at immediate damage control, her voice cracking with forced sweetness.

"Ethan, darling, please! It’s all a massive, ridiculous misunderstanding! I—I genuinely thought she was a random trespasser off the highway. She looked... I mean, look at her clothes! Anyone would have thought—"

I stood up slowly, shaking off the water from my sleeves with quiet dignity. I didn't need anyone's help to rise. I reached deliberately into my wet canvas shopping bag and pulled out my phone, which had been recording continuously. With a firm press of my thumb, I tapped a button, and the high-fidelity audio from the last ten minutes began to project clearly through a small wireless speaker I had slipped into my pocket.

“We don't allow street people to crash celebrations for respectable folks.” “Beggars don't belong at weddings here.” “Remove this woman immediately before she spoils our photographs.” “And search her bag before sending her away. We wouldn't want her stealing anything.”

The crystal-clear recording echoed relentlessly across the silent, sprawling garden. The guests—the very elite socialites Vanessa had spent years trying to impress—recoiled as if struck. Several people pulled out their phones, not to record me anymore, but to frantically check the developing online backlash as the leaked audio instantly hit local gossip feeds.

"You aren't just a bride with high standards, Vanessa," I said, my voice cutting through the humid afternoon air like a razor blade. "You’re a bully. A cruel, small-minded individual. And you are a massive liability to everything my son has built and stands for."

Ethan walked slowly toward her, closing the distance between them. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. He leaned in close, his eyes burning with absolute disgust.

"The engagement is officially off," Ethan stated, the words falling like a guillotine blade. "Get off this property within the hour. And don't bother coming back for your personal belongings. I’ll have your things packed in trash bags and shipped to the curb of your father's estate by midnight."

"Ethan, you can't do this to me!" Vanessa shrieked, her mask of pristine perfection finally shattering entirely as she realized her golden ticket to wealth and power was vanishing before her eyes. "My family name! Our connections! You'll ruin us!"

"Your family name ruined itself the second you opened your mouth," Ethan replied flatly, turning his back on her forever.
