Chapter 2 - THE FALLING MASK

Ethan dropped his glass. The sound of crystal shattering against the stone patio acted as a starting pistol for the absolute chaos that was about to unfold across the pristine courtyard. The sharp clatter cut through the ambient murmur of the elite crowd, silencing the polite chatter instantly.

Vanessa, still clutching the heavy green garden hose in her manicured hand, turned back around with a bright, triumphant smirk plastered across her face, expecting her fiancé to join in on the mocking spectacle.

"Ethan, darling! You have to look at this absolute freak," she called out, her voice dripping with condescension and performative amusement. "She wandered right in off the street like a stray animal, and she’s already causing a scene, tracking mud all over—"

Ethan didn't hear a single word of her explanation.

He was already sprinting across the lawn, his expensive, custom-crafted Italian leather shoes sinking deep into the manicured turf, ruining the grass he cared nothing about anymore. He didn't care about the watching investors, the socialites, the cameras, or the optical perfection of his engagement party.

He dropped straight to his knees right beside me in the wet dirt and mud, his hands trembling violently as he reached out to grab my shoulders.

"Mom?" he choked out, his voice a raw, shattered whisper that carried effortlessly across the sudden silence of the garden.

The silence that followed was absolute, heavy, and suffocating.

The thirty high-society guests, including the prominent Mitchell family, froze in place as if turned to stone. The color completely drained from Vanessa’s face, shifting rapidly from a warm, sun-kissed flush to a sickly, chalky grey. The green garden hose slipped completely from her lax fingers, the heavy brass nozzle hissing loudly as it whipped around on the grass, spraying water aimlessly into the empty air.

I didn’t stand up right away. I looked straight into my son’s eyes, keeping my expression calm, heavy with disappointment, but infinitely forgiving.

"I wanted to see who she was, Ethan," I whispered softly, letting him hear every word. "I wanted to see if she truly deserved the man I raised."

"Mom, you’re freezing," he said, ignoring every single person standing around us, his eyes welling up with hot tears of fury and disbelief. He tore off his expensive, designer custom blazer and wrapped it tenderly around my shivering, soaked shoulders, pulling me close against his chest.

Slowly, I turned my head to look up at Vanessa.

She was standing frozen on the grass, the woman who had just minutes ago branded me a beggar and a trespasser, her mouth hanging open in a silent, horrified gasp of total realization. Her mother, Patricia, looked like she was about to faint on the spot, clutching her husband's arm so tightly her knuckles turned white.

May you like

"Vanessa," Ethan stood up slowly, rising from the mud. His voice was dangerously, terrifyingly cold. The polite, accommodating host who had welcomed Nashville's elite minutes ago was entirely gone. In his place stood the ruthless Chief Executive Officer of Carter Enterprises, a man renowned in the corporate world for dismantling corrupt entities without a second thought.

"You just assaulted my mother."
