Chapter 8 - Rebuilding from the Ruins

The aftermath of the battle at the shipyard was a whirlwind of legal filings, federal indictments, and media frenzy.

Arthur Pendelton’s empire crumbled within forty-eight hours. The evidence contained in Daniel's ledger and the digital files on the flash drive was overwhelming. It exposed a massive web of corruption that stretched from Chicago to the Cayman Islands. Dozens of politicians, developers, and corrupt judges—including Judge Evelyn Cole—were arrested.

Vanessa Carter was charged with first-degree murder, child abandonment, and corporate espionage. There would be no bail for her. She would spend the rest of her life behind bars, a fitting end for a woman who had traded her humanity for gold.

But for me, the real work was just beginning.

I stood in the office of the new family court judge, a highly respected woman named Judge Marianne Carter (no relation to Daniel). She looked at the thick stack of papers on her desk, then looked at me, and finally at Lily and Owen, who were sitting quietly in the corner, playing with Barnaby the bear.

"Mr. Steel," Judge Carter said, her voice warm but serious. "The federal authorities have verified the validity of Daniel Carter’s true will. It is clear he wanted you to have custody of his children in the event of his death. But I must ask you: you are a bachelor, a billionaire, a man whose life is defined by your work. Are you truly prepared to be a father?"

I looked at the twins. Over the last month, they had transformed. The quiet fear in their eyes had been replaced by a bright, curious light. They no longer flinched when someone walked too fast. They had learned to laugh, to run, and to trust that when the sun went down, they would wake up safe in the morning.

"I didn't choose this, Your Honor," I said honestly. "But Daniel was my brother in everything but blood. And these children are my family now. I will spend every resource I have, and every day of my life, making sure they are loved, protected, and happy."

Judge Carter smiled, a genuine, beautiful expression. She picked up her gavel and brought it down with a firm clack.

"Petition for permanent sole legal custody and adoption is hereby granted. Congratulations, Mr. Steel. You are officially a father."

As we walked out of the courthouse, the reporters and cameras were waiting. But my security team kept them at bay, creating a wall of steel around us.

I picked Owen up in one arm, and Lily in the other. They laughed, their small hands holding onto my shoulders.

"Where are we going now, Ryker?" Lily asked.

"We're going home," I said. "But not to the penthouse. I bought a new house. A house with a big yard, a treehouse, and plenty of room for a dragon's family."
