Chapter 3 - The Battle for the Den

My penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan was usually a sanctuary of minimalist luxury. It was a place of cold marble, dark wood, and absolute silence. It was a place built for a man who lived alone and preferred it that way.

Now, it was occupied by two five-year-olds who were currently sitting on my custom-made Italian leather sofa, looking thoroughly overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the room.

"Is this the dragon's cave?" Owen asked, his voice echoing slightly in the high-ceilinged living room. He was still clutching his stuffed bear, but he had allowed my housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, to wrap a warm wool blanket around his shoulders.

"It is," I said, loosening my tie and tossing it onto a chair. "But the dragon is off-duty. You can call me Ryker."

"Ryker," Lily tested the name, her voice small but steady. "Is Vanessa going to jail?"

"She's being questioned by the police," I replied honestly. I didn't believe in lying to children, especially not children who had already tasted the bitter flavor of adult betrayal. "But she has expensive lawyers, Lily. She might not stay there long. But I promise you, she is not coming here. You are safe."

I waited until Mrs. Gable brought in a tray of hot chocolate and a plate of chocolate chip cookies. Once the children were occupied, their small faces lit up by the simple warmth of the treats, I walked over to my study and closed the heavy oak door.

It was time to open the letter.

I sat at my desk, the brass key catching the light of the desk lamp. With careful fingers, I unwrapped the protective plastic and unfolded the heavy parchment. The handwriting was unmistakably Daniel's—sharp, precise, the hand of an architect who spent his life drawing straight lines and perfect angles.

Ryker,

If you are reading this, then the worst has happened, and Vanessa has finally shown her true colors. I knew she would. I only pray that Lily and Owen found you before she could do them any real harm.

I didn't die of a sudden heart attack, Ryker. I know what the official medical report says, but I was poisoned. Slowly, methodically. Vanessa has been working with someone—someone powerful enough to cover their tracks and manipulate the medical examiners. I couldn't prove it in time, but I managed to secure the evidence before they could destroy it.

The key Owen carried belongs to a safety deposit box at the Meridian Trust Bank on Michigan Avenue. Box number 412. Inside, you will find the blueprints for the Sterling Heights project, along with the financial ledger that proves Vanessa and her associates have been laundering money through my architectural firm.

Protect my children, Ryker. They are the only beautiful things I ever created. Vanessa wants them because of the trust fund—she cannot access the fifty million dollars Daniel Carter Estate unless she has full, uncontested custody of the twins. If she loses them, she loses everything.

I called you a dragon because you never back down from a fight, and you burn down anything that threatens what you care about. Burn her down, Ryker. For me. For the kids.

Your friend, Daniel

My hands tightened on the paper, crumpling the edges. A cold, feral rage, the kind I hadn't felt in years, flared up deep in my chest.

Daniel hadn't just died. He had been murdered. And his murderer had just tried to dump his children like unwanted garbage at an airport terminal to secure her access to a multi-million-dollar fortune.

The phone on my desk rang, shattering the silence. It was Marcus.

"Ryker," my attorney's voice was tight with tension. "We have a problem. I filed the emergency guardianship petition, but Vanessa’s lawyers were already prepared. They’ve filed a counter-suit claiming parental alienation and kidnapping. They are claiming you coerced the children at the airport."

"I have five security cameras and a dozen eyewitnesses who saw her board a flight without them," I growled.

"That doesn't matter to a family court judge who is being paid off," Marcus said quietly. "Judge Harrison was recused. The case has been assigned to Judge Evelyn Cole. She’s notorious for favoring biological parents, and her husband's law firm just received a massive, anonymous retainer last week."

"Vanessa is moving fast," I muttered, my mind racing. "She knows about the letter, Marcus. She knows I have the key."

May you like

"What key?"

"The key to her undoing," I said, staring at the brass object on my desk. "Get the legal team ready, Marcus. We are going to war. And tell our security team to double the guards at the penthouse. Vanessa is going to try to take the kids back, and she won't use a courtroom to do it."
