Chapter 4 - Shadow of the Blueprint

The next morning, the city of Chicago was blanketed in a thick, gray fog. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my study, watching the mist roll off the lake, obscuring the skyscrapers below.

Downstairs, the penthouse was unusually lively. Lily and Owen were exploring the library under the watchful eye of Mrs. Gable. I could hear their quiet laughter, a sound so foreign to these walls that it felt almost sacred.

I had the brass key in my pocket. My plan was simple: go to Meridian Trust, empty the safety deposit box, and hand the evidence over to the federal authorities. But in my world, simple plans rarely survived contact with reality.

"Sir," my head of security, a former Special Forces operator named Gabe, walked into the study. His face was grim. "We've got a tail. Two black SUVs parked across the street since six o'clock this morning. They're not city police, and they're not standard private security. These guys are professionals."

"Vanessa's associates," I said, tapping my fingers on the desk. "The ones Daniel mentioned in his letter. She’s not working alone. Who is backing her, Gabe?"

"We ran the plates," Gabe replied, handing me a tablet. "They're registered to a shell company called 'Vanguard Holdings.' The parent company is owned by Arthur Pendelton."

I froze. The name hit me like a physical blow.

Arthur Pendelton was one of the most powerful real estate developers in the Midwest. He was a man who built empires on the bones of ruined neighborhoods and corrupted politicians. I had crossed paths with him once, years ago, during a hostile takeover of a shipping conglomerate. He was ruthless, brilliant, and completely devoid of empathy.

"Daniel was working on the Sterling Heights project for Pendelton," I murmured, the pieces of the puzzle suddenly clicking into place. "The project was supposed to be a massive urban renewal initiative, but Daniel must have discovered that Pendelton was using it to launder cartel money. Vanessa was Pendelton's inside asset. She married Daniel to keep an eye on him, and when Daniel found out, they eliminated him."

"And now the kids are the only threat to their money train," Gabe added. "If Vanessa loses custody, the trust fund—which holds the land deeds for Sterling Heights—stays locked. Pendelton can't break ground without those deeds."

"Then we don't let them have the kids, and we don't let them have the deeds," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Gabe, get the armored transport ready. We're going to the bank."

"What about the children?"

"They stay here, under maximum guard. If anyone so much as looks at this building the wrong way, neutralize them."

I walked out of the study and down the hallway to the library. Lily and Owen were sitting on the rug, surrounded by old, leather-bound books. Owen had his toy bear tucked under his arm.

I knelt down in front of them. "I have to go out for a little while," I said, keeping my voice gentle. "I have to take care of some business for your dad."

Lily looked at me, her blue eyes incredibly old for her five years. "Are you going to fight the monsters?"

I smiled, a genuine, rare expression that felt rusty on my face. "Yes, Lily. I'm going to fight the monsters. And I promise you, I'm going to win."

"Take this," Owen said suddenly, pulling the stuffed bear from his arm and pushing it into my hands. "Barnaby is brave. He can help you."

I looked at the worn, one-eyed bear. For a man who had spent his life relying on steel, concrete, and cold hard cash, holding that toy felt like holding the most valuable shield in the world.

"Thank you, Owen," I said, tucking Barnaby under my arm. "I'll keep him safe. You two stay with Mrs. Gable, okay?"

May you like

They both nodded, and for the first time, I saw a flicker of real peace in their eyes. They believed in the Dragon.

I had to make sure their faith wasn't misplaced.
